Z16 - disappointed

On reflection (no pun intended) I wonder if (1) the tyre was as clean as possible and (2) if like lowekackson surmises there's "something" about Dunlops.

I sprayed A2Z evenly across each tyre, scrubbed with my small detail brush (like a very stiff bristled toothbrush) and rinsed, then washed wheel as usual including tyre with strong dilution of soap/water then rinsed. When I dried tyres the cloth picked up virtually no dirt from the tyre yet when I applied the Z16 the applicator collected a fair bit of brown residue.

I should have said in my original post that I did apply a 2nd coat after approx 45 minutes.

Saying that, I've covered around 650 miles since Saturday and the UPP's lost its sheen completely - without any rain at all.

I'm not too cut up though - it's winter and the roads are grim so TBH tyre dressing's a bit of a lost cause IMO.

I think my main issue was with the price of Z16 by comparison to the various dressings I already have - applying the "is it XXX times better?" formula makes Z16 a definite disappointment against B&B, UPP, even Megs Endurance & Mothers Duration as it's around twice the price of these products and IMHO nowhere near twice as good in terms of both appearance and durability.

Ref AG Instant Tyre Dressing...

I presume that's the No.5 Rubber Cleaner from the trade range?

No Rubber Plus is different to the tyre dressing.

Rubber Cleaner 5 (plus) is a thicker liquid , in all honesty it looks like Wee  It is alot more durable than the tyre dressing.

The normal shop brought AG tyre dressing is the same as Vinyl and Rubber Care but with no lemon fragrence. If you want this in a five litre size go for AG Super Sheen, 20 quid for 5 litres.

To confuse things AG do a trade tyre dressing call Tyre Sheen 30, itrs not Water Proof tho. Just for showroom cars.

I have been doing my tyres with a coat off Rubber Plus, alowing to dry and then a coat of Super Sheen.

Andy,

Meguiar's Endurance is very very good product.

Tire manufacturers have very different compositions so it may be a case of finding out what works best for your tires. It's not any different than polishes as some people have great success with X product and other's dispise it.

Michelin have an additive in their newer tires to keep the black longer. I'm not sure if the Dunlops do as well but I seem to recall they did. Perhaps that's the reason.

The best way to test out the product is to fully clean your tires and then apply one product to the both right side tires and another both left side tires.

Then have a look daily/weekly etc and see if one holds up any better than other.

I find that my fronts look worse then my rears after a week or so. Probably because they take a bit more punishment with respect to the elements. So comparing 4 products at one time wouldn't be a fair assessment as the products on the rear but not be subjected to the same type of wear.

Gee, I spoke too soon about how wonderfully my Z-16 is holding up! I'd been thinking how I like a pretty matte look to my tires and others might very well want far more sheen that mine have maintained through the winter...that was one thing, and I was thinking about this thread when I washed my wife's A8 today.

After today's wash (tires washed with diluted wheel cleaner again), the Z-16 is pretty dead. This must've been the last straw that made all the difference. They look OK from a few feet back considering it's still winter in Ohio, but I know most Autopians would be pretty unhappy with them. I'm just gonna let them go until I put the summer wheels/tires back on, but I'm certain that after the *next* wash they're gonna look pretty sorry.

But still, I got through most of a tough winter without redoing them, and that's plenty good enough for me. I believe DavidB hit the nail on the head- let the Z-16 set up for a while before you buff it off. That and getting the tires *truly* clean. By the time I applied my Z-16 they really were clean, no staining of the white cloth I used with the Z-16.
