Your favorite motor oil

I had the dealer flush the engine to remove the old stuff before putting in synthetic.

Dale- I'll let you know how the 0-30 Amsoil works at my next change-- about 1,000 more miles or so.

I usually use whatever major manufacturer is least expensive. Lately I have found that Castrol Syntex and Valvoline SynPower seem to be close on price, so I just go with whatever is closer to me on the shelf. Both of our cars are VWs with the 1.8t motor, and I change oil every 5k with either a Bosch or Pure One filter. I used to use Mobil 1, but at $.50 to $1.00 more per quart, I don't think it is that much different from the other brands to necessitate the difference in price.

The difference between conventionals & synthetics is similar to the difference between TurtleWax and Klasse/Zaino. To the average Joe - there's no difference. To people in the know - the difference is quite apparent.

Well, I don't know if I'd go to that extreme. There are some excellent Group II+ hydrocracked oils on the market, most notably Chevron Supreme.

And there are a good number of Group III "full synthetics" that aren't worth the price they're charging.

As for retail-bought synthetics, Mobil One is an excellent choice. I used that in my Saab until I switched to Castrol Syntec 0W-30, the so-called German Syntec. Both are excellent products and would work well in most applications.

Be careful of subjective "proof" and their conclusions. Just because a certain oil worked well in someone else's car does not mean it will work the same in *your car*. The only way you will know if an oil is really doing its job in your engine is through regular analysis. Having your used oil analysed and interpreted will provide you with the trend data you need to make long term decisions about how to car for your engine. Anything else is pure speculation.

For the Benzes:

Mobil 1 0w40. Change every 10-13k miles (dependent on FSS)

For the lexus:

Whatever crap motor oil the dealer uses from their huge tank. Change every 5-6k miles or when piston rings screech to a halt.

MMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmm...my personal favorite:

Delvac1case.jpg

...a true synthetic (gr IV) oil.

Regular Mobil 1 is also a group IV PAO oil, Tom.

Just a FYI for everyone, while Delvac 1 can be used in gas motors, it's designed for use in diesel engines.

Showroom, yes, I am well aware of that fact. It's one of the few Group IV syn oils remaining in a world of imposters and syn oil wannabees. I use Mobil 1 5W 30 in my gassers.
