Yet another Poorboy prototype review

"Beep Beep"
I finally had a chance to try two of the new Poorboy’s prototypes today. I tried the wash formula with low suds and high lubricity. I also tried the spray and rinse wheel cleaner.

The wheel cleaner formula is designed to be a spray on, let soak, and then rinse off type of product. It’s supposed to be strong enough to tackle German brake dust but not strip off sealants in the process. The designated guinea pig for my first use of this product was a Porsche wheel that was treated with Klasse AIO and SG about 4 months ago. In the interim, the car was regularly maintained with Spray & Wipe or traditional washes. Since the previous washing, the car has been driven a little over 200 miles. The Klasse has been doing a good job of keeping the brake dust to a minimum, but it’s still an issue. Here is a picture of the wheel lugs after rinsing with a hose.

I sprayed the cleaner onto the wheel with the little sample spray bottle, then waited about a minute. This picture was taken about 30 seconds after spraying.

However, it was immediately apparent that I had not evenly sprayed the product onto the wheel. You could clearly see where the spray had landed and where it has missed. So, I poured the remainder of the cleaner into another bottle with a higher volume sprayer then tried again. This picture was taken about 30 seconds after the second spraying.

With a more complete spray pattern, the wheel cleaned up quite nicely. Even the hard to reach areas of the interior came clean with no scrubbing at all. :bigups The cleaner passed this first test with flying colors. Now, I just need to get my hands on another sample so I can try it on a dirtier wheel.

The second prototype product I tried today was the super slick car shampoo. I compared 4 shampoos last week and decided that the BMW wash was my favorite of that bunch. So, I put it up against the PB wash in a side by side comparison.

I diluted 1.5 ounces of each in 1.5 gallons of water. Both products seemed to produce an equal amount of suds in the bucket.

Armed with two identical mitts, I washed one side of the car with the PB shampoo and the other side with the BMW shampoo. The PB product seemed to be a bit slicker than the BMW wash. This was impressive since I found the BMW to be slicker than Sonax Gloss, 4* Ultimate Auto Wash, and Meg’s Gold Class Shampoo. Despite being ultra slick, the PB wash produced suds that clung to the surface. In this picture, the PB wash is on the left with the BMW wash on the right.

If the suds clung to the paint, would that make the product harder to rinse off? Apparently not, since the water just seemed to sheet off the PB side more cleanly than the BMW side.

The shampoo lathered up, cleaned, and rinsed so well that I am curious to see if it will work as well with a less concentrated dilution. I still have a little of the prototype wash left, so my next washing project will be to try using half an ounce of shampoo per gallon of water. Stay tuned for more results.

Great review Marj! Just curious, what type of wax/sealent did you have on the porsche's paint before the wash?
Well, that car is currently a rolling test bed of products. I think I have about 9 different combos on the various panels. On the picture of the hood, both sides have EX-P topped with S100.

I clayed after washing, so I am starting over from scratch now. I plan to do SSR1, VM, EX (x2), then S100.

I wonder how people can tell ounces and measurements. The PB Wash and Rim cleaner is great! Now I just wonder if I can hold out until XMas.

the poorboys wash seems a lot like 1z perls shampoo...which is my current fav. wash. im a big fan of high lubricity low suds washes bc i find suds annoying. does the PB wash leave any kind of protection??

i got one word for the wheel cleaner...SOLD!!!!!:wait

great reviews. thanks

I definitely want some of that wheel cleaner and no doubt will have to eventually get some of the car wash too. I keep telling everyone I have everything I need. Apparently I don't know my limits well! :)

great reviews!!! i think you need to send some prototypes over to hawaii for me a ranney:wait :wait :wait

Marj,

As always, great review, and pictures! It sounds like Steve has a couple of winners in those two products?

Anything on the drying?

Woob,

Look around at Wal-Mart, or any of those type stores for the empty 2 or 4 oz bottles. I use a small funnel, fill several of them up, and then label them with the product. It's pretty easy to guage an ounce as you are pouring them into the bucket.

Excellent idea! I've been thinking about that. Cool stuff.

Yes, I used a single waffle weave towel for drying. For the first panel (the hood), I was careful to use only one end of the towel to dry one side of the hood. Then, I flipped the towel to the other end and dried the other side of the hood. The PB side seemed to have just a bit more drag than the BMW side, but nothing out of the ordinary. I also checked to see if either one was leaving behind a lot of residue, but once again I saw nothing out of the ordinary. One of Steve's earlier prototype washes left behind a lot of residue, so I was glad to see that this version eliminated that problem.

I plan to do more testing with milder concentrations of each shampoo. If the performance holds up, either one of them would be a candidate to replace Gold Class as my regular shampoo. The BMW shampoo would be reasonably priced, and I'd have to guess that the PB product would be fairly priced as well.
