yet another blackfire thread... quick question

first of all let me just say i tried the search feature on blackfire already. though there were lots of info on it, i was still unsure about something...

one of my members of the site i moderate suggested that BF contained a very small amoung tof silicones in it. Is this true? my first though was "no way, not from a product made by people who seriously know detailing"... but i was a little skepticle about it.

also while im on this thread, can anyone tell me any other negative qualities of BF? so far i can see durability is quite questionable and definitley not lasting as long as klasse and Z. i also noticed the wash is pretty high up the PH scale and seems to help shorten BF's, or anything, durability. besides this, is there anything else about BF you guys didnt like?

any input is always greatly appreciated! oh yea, i might be a bit slow here but i love the new look of the site!

All silicones are not bad. It depends on the type and form. Liquid glass and finish first are silicone polymers and are not bad. It's the oils often found in carnuba wax and slingy tire dressings (dimethyl) that body shops recommend staying away from.

I have decided that durability is definatly an issue. I only have 5 coats on and I put a layer of Souveran on every 3 or 4 weeks for good measure. The last couple weeks or so, however, I've noticed that my car looks very dull. It doesn't quite have the same look it used to. Almost like there is a haze over it or something. I applied a new layer of Souveran the other day and it didn't improve at all. I'm going to strip it all off and clay the car and do the whole process over again to see if I get the same results. I don't know what the problem is but it really upsets me.

There is a dust problem with BF too. It attracts dust like there is no tomorrow. A couple layers of carnuba seem to solve that problem though. On this next run maybe I'll put a layer of SG over the BF and see if that kills the dust problem quicker. I didn't have nearly the problem with Klasse.

I really like the way BF looks. The longer I use it the more I learn about it though. I would still recommend it but I have to say that it is pretty high maintance. I don't kow what I did wrong to get this dull look but I'll track it down and fix it.

Jngr,

I've had up to 11 coats of BF on a white car before I stripped it, and it only looked better with additional coat but never dull at any point of time. I also applied 5 coats on my bro's black SUV and it still looks normal at this point. Maybe Souveran topper has something to do with it? Pls keep us updated :)

I've switched one of the car to Klasse and will be studying and comparing the dust attraction with BF.

Maybe what is happening is my layers of Souveran are bringing out the swirls that I have. Its a white car so I don't really notice them very much. Or maybe I've done something very wrong and really swirled it and that is what I'm seeing. I just need to find the time to bust out a PC and spend a day on the car to get it back to its blinding white perfection. I love BF. It is really good stuff. Before I place the blame on BF for my recent blahs I should really verify that it isn't something else. I still suggest BF to anyone that wants a polymer shine and a carnuba glow. :up

thanks for the clarification! i always thought all silicones are bad, since that is the case with plastic/vinyl type products.

It's silicone OILS that are bad with plastic / vinyl products :). The safe stuff is the milky colored PDMS resin (silicone powder in water, basically?) solutions. This is still a type of silicone though!

As you know, the unsafe ones are the greasy clear kinds that may have "WARNING: CONTAINS PETROLEUM DISTILLATES."
