yellow Ferrari 458

I will be using a PC7424 for my detailing work. I haven't cleaned my paint before. I just applied Klasse last year without any paint cleaning. I plan on doing the following:

1. Wash with Meguiars Soft Gel car wash.

2. 3M SMR. Might have to opt for Finesse It II if swirls are still there.

3. Using AIO to remove any hazing if that occurs. 4. Apply 2XAIO followed by 1XSG. Each proceeding week 1XSG till five coats.

5. Hopefully, Pinnacle Souveran as topper after the five coats. Hope another group buy happens for Souveran. :)

If anyone has anything to add or opinions please post. :) The car is a '99 Maxima black in colour. Thanks everybody. :)

Just wanted to let you know that Pinnacle Souveran is on sale this week at CMA for $55.00. Click on "Spring Specials" in the left hand column. :)

Man, I feel bad that the GB couldn't last longer. I doubt that another one will be able to be established. It is sort of like the Zaino thing. Pinnacle has control over who sells their product. Jump on the CMA deal. Do it before the end of the week so you don't miss it. I'm excited to see what they offer next week. Maybe the big blue towel will go on sale.

I really want to give my money to CMA but they don't want it. Why? They don't ship to Canada. My money is waiting for someone to be taken in exchange for Souveran. I came close with the GB but no luck. :( Also, if I use SMR first and moved up to Finesse IT II. Do I have to use SMR after to remove the hazing and AIO afterwards?

99ESMAX,

I plan on doing my truck in a similar way this spring. I was told on this board that I should probably clay or do Autoint's ABC system to get all of the dirt/contaminants off the paint BEFORE the SMR. I'm thinking that if you don't clean w/clay or ABC first, the SMR step may grind the dirt/contaminants into your paint, rather than remove them. I'm planning on buying the ABC system from www.autoint.com

Doesn't CMA usually have a Spring sale for Autopia members? Or does Autopia sponsor (have an online coupon) a sale at CMA?

The Autopia discount is different. Even when it is 20% the prices aren't quite this low. Autopia only gets a discount a few times a year anyway. The Spring deal at CMA right now is for everybody. We might get an Autopia discount later in the spring but probably not in conjunction with another CMA sale. There is a special section of products for Autopians, however. Check out the link at the top right. Click on the Exclusive Autopia Specials link. :xyxthumbs

Is Mother's clay decent compared to the other clays on the market? Mother's clay is available at my local autoparts store. Can I use my Meguiars Soft Gel car wash as the lube? Would be better on the wallet to use the car wash as the lube.

I've only tried the Meguiar's bodyshop line of clay and Mother's. Mother's beats Meguiar's hands down. The Meguairs seems to leave lots of residue no matter how much lube you use. From reading past posts here, everyone thinks the Mother's is a good product. Other recommend Clay Magic, which I haven't tried, but plan to in the future. The only problem with Mother's is that it comes in a package with cleaner wax and their quick detailer, neither of which I use. I use Meguiar's Final Inspection with the Mother's clay, and on my car (bought second hand) made the finish so smooth and slick, all my friends thought I had brought it to a pro detailer! Little did they know, I did. I got advice from people here! :)

Researching previous posts on claying and don't know what to do now. Some say to use pressure and others just glide the clay a long the surface of the paint. ABC system is better from some Autopians. Which method is better? Confused. :(

I have read about the ABC stuff. But unlike some others here, I have only one car, and am not willing to experiment with chemicals on it. It's also a daily driver, so I cannot leave it in the garage for several days to try all these methods.

As for the claying, I've always used the light pressure and with lots of lube, and going over the spots until I don't hear the harsh hissing. Worked really well. I don't know if I want to put pressure on the clay which is picking up contaminants. The way I look at it is like the doctor's motto: "Do no harm". So if it doesn't work with light pressure, I can always go back and try using a little more pressure, right?:)

For now, I'll clay first and see how everything turns out. Light pressure and redo problem areas a few times to eliminate the deep down dirt if they clay can actually do that. ABC system at a later date. :)

I don't know if it's the same in Ontario, but in BC, Crappy Tire is selling EO 20/20 for $3.99 a bottle currently. I am going to go over this weekend and stock up!:up

20/20 is on sale as the whole Eagle line-up at CT is on sale. 2wheelsx2, have you tried the Chenille wash mitts CT sells? I don't know if they are decent or just plain well *rap. :) It feels good but don't know how it compares to the real sheepskin washmitt they sell in terms of scratching the car surface.

Yes Mother's clay is a good product. They sell it in a kit that has a bottle of their QD in it that you can use as a lube. The kit also comes with a small bottle of cleaner wax. I think many of us still have it on the back of our shelves somewhere?

You will like what claying does for your paint it makes it very smooth which is why it is a good step in prepping. If you get a chance to work on a white or light colored car the first time you clay I think it will help because the lighter color allows you to see the specs that you can remove with the clay. The amount of lube you use is kinda like baby bear's oatmeal... not too wet and not too dry works just right.

Hope one piece of clay that comes in the kit is enough for my Maxima. The problem areas are near the bottom of the doors as there are some rust specs. Hope the clay can remove them. Hope I use the right amount of lube. :)

I have not tried the cotton mitts at CT. Maybe you can be the guinea pig? :)

As for the clay, one bar should be plenty. Just make sure you do the lower panels last, and keep kneading the clay to get a fresh surface, otherwise, you could risk scratching your finish.

BTW, I just went to the CT near my house, and they're all sold out of 20/20! :( Guess I'll have to try a different one.
