Yellow Cutting Pads with a RO

In a previous post Accumulator mentioned "I can't imagine ever using yellow foam cutting pads with the GG polisher"

A Newbie to Machine polishing questions: Why wouldn't you use a Yellow Foam Cutting Pad with a RO like the GG6?? Could you use a 4" Yellow with a GG6 for just spot correction of deeper scratches or are multiple passes with an Orange pad better?

Repeating my response on the other thread in case somebody finds it helpful here:

I find yellow cutting pads a) don't correct better than/as well as other options, b) those other options leave a much better finish, and c) are safer.

Orange foam cutting pads are usually sufficiently aggressive. If not, the burgundy Meguiar's foam cutting pads (both the old 7006 and the newer version, which comes in different sizes) usually cut great and again, leave things in better condition.

But these days, for serious correction I'd be all about the new-tech MF cutting pads. OK, and SurBuf (sp?!?) pads, though those haven't worked as well for me as they have for others. The MF cutting pads really are game-changers with the right products, and FWIW I'm kinda hard to impress where such stuff is concerned

I have yellow foam cutting pads. More than a few in various sizes. Haven't touched them in years. Well, I did try them on a few particularly challenging corrections, and found that I had other pads (both wool, yeah...wool with a PC, and foam) that worked *MUCH* better. And again, these days I just reach for the MF cutting pads.

I don't think it has anything to do with the type of machine. Yellow leaves significant marring on anything I ever used them on. I also just didn't like the way they feel when you work them. If you need yellow you'd be better off with wool, IMO. Since I first used PFW then later Meg's MF I gave away all my yellow pads.

There ya go...

I'm assuming you are talking about the coarse LC yellows. The Yellow cutting pads from B&S cut very well on the PC and leave a very nice finish.

I am planning on getting B&S pads--orange, green & red (and perhaps white) in 5.5" and the same in 4", but also add a couple of 4" yellow just for difficult spot correction. All with UNO. I'm new to machine polishing so appriciate all the help I can get.

This is a good example of how we have to be careful when we generalize about pads based on the foam's color. Similar to the way Griot's orange pads are sooo different from "regular orange light-cut pads".

That is why "open" forums like this are so valuable to those of us starting out on something new--you get valuable input from a number of knowledgable people and the forum doesn't limit the members to only post regarding products sold by the sponsors (like some other forums)

Thanks guys!!!

Exactly. For that matter, if you were talking about Meguiar's pads the Yellow pad is their polishing pad, it's not even a cutting pad.

Agree with accummulator. I dont use yellows anymore. wool, velvet, denim, opt microfibre and rayon pads are my choice for correction

SVR- Denim, velvet, and rayon?!? Heh heh, you're always just a bit outside the box compared to what we're doing here in the states!

Hi mate, 2011 was pad technology and orange peel reduction/removal year

2012 will be all about tools, machines and accessories for polishing

what the americans are doing is definately still cutting edge but now asia is rising up with some good technology and europe still leads the way in some parts of detailing

I mostly only ever detail the paintwork, exterior trims, wheels and tyres so that's why I'm always on the lookout for new technology from all over the world and also from other industries, it makes it easier
