wow business is crazy

Detailing NY

I feel like I have not posted anything in such along time.

Business is crazy, its like all of a sudden everyone in the world wants to have the car detailed.

This may seem crazy but sometimes I pray for a little rain just to give me a rest and some sleep.

On a side note, i have been working out every day and running 2 miles. I have lost a total of 15lbs already :)

What about the rest of the pro's, how is everything going with you guys or gals.

Some guy called me the other day to come "detail" a single floormat. He said "it's got something on it." I respectfully told him that my business was do to primarily make the paint finish spectucular and that a single floormat was not a good allocation of my time.

mine's going the same as yours NYD. 7 days a week for me, and most days i do not get home b4 6pm. i'm getting very little sleep and am pretty drained while on the job. apparently it's starting to show. thank god i'm going on vacation next month. however, i'd always rather have too much business than not enough.

I've been really busy, especially in light of the daily threat of thunderstorms in the afternoons. I'll be working 7 days a week for at least the next few weeks. I have to if I want to take off about 7-10 days in June.

I've been working out also-skating at the local park. During one 7 day stretch, I got 104 miles in. Since Monday, I've got 58 miles this week. Hopefully, the thunderstorms stay to the north so I can double that for the week. I lost 12 pounds in April and another couple this month. I need all new shirts now, I'm swimming in the ones I have!

Greg, I know it may have been a P.I.T.A., to do a carmat, but that would have been a future client to you ! I always go out of my way for my clients. I drove 1/2 hr once to take puke off a leather seat ! Ive done the guys 02 HD Silverado twice since then, and he's set me up with additional clients since....

Just my 2 bits...

I know it very well could have been a future customer, but driving 45 minutes to clean a floormat for $10 just isn't worth it. I've got enough business right now that I can afford to decline some business.

I understand what you are saying but, if i was extremly busy i would not take on a customer just to do his floor mat. I would agree with telling the customer that it can not be done. i would just set it up for another time or have him leave the mat.

I'm not a pro detailer, but I am self-employed. I set a minimum charge of three hours if I have to travel. Sometimes I'll go with actual time, including travel time. I don't want customers who can't accept that my time is valuable. I like the idea of dropping off the mat. That way it's the customer spending time, not you. It's the kind of thing I get my clients to do.

I'll call him and suggest that he can drop it off. By that time though, he could have easily gone to the grocery store and rented a rug doctor for $20.

Thats the reason you are a pro, because people do not want to do it them selves. If they did then none of us would be working.

They customers expect more from you then if they did it themselves.

Either that or explain to him how to clean it himself, saying that with the surcharge you'd have to add for the drive time, he'd save a lot of money. I did that with a guy whose truck had been broken into and had glass all over the passenger seat. He wanted me to come out that day and vacuum it, but I was completely booked. He said even if it was late, he didn't care because he was afraid the glass would cut his leather seats. I explained to him that it was safety glass and very unlikely to cut his seat, and with what I would charge for an 'after hours' trip, it would not be cost effective. I suggested he take it to a self serve car wash, feed some quarters into the machine and get the glass out that day and save a lot of money.

He called the next day to let me know he did just what I suggested, it worked great and I saved him a lot of money. He then scheduled both his and his wife's Suburbans to be detailed. I ended up detailing his wife's sisters Suburbans also. Used to clean them all the time until 2 of the sisters moved out of the area.

As long as you handle it right, you can turn down business and still get them as a customer down the road.

I have been busier than he!!
