I'm curious, for those in the pro detailing racket, who would sell if you were approached? I've been going a couple months, and have had a possible interested investor, and every other detailing group in town has been either bought or sold.

I would never sell. I have to much pride and would rather lose all my business and have to shut down before i sold my company.

i guess if after a few months and ur already intrested in selling....maybe its not the career u really want. if u do like it then dont sell.

Been at this for a long time and would sell in a heartbeat if the money was right.

Sorry, I'm not interested in selling. Just curious about where people are at. I'd really only sell if I was moving. I really enjoy the work, and like working for myself instead of others, and offering(in some areas) higher quality work.

I would never sell a business. I would close my doors and sell my equipment, but I would never sell my reputation for someone else to profit from. If they want to build their own customer base and build their own reputation then they are more than welcome to buy my supplies to do it. They wouldn't get a customer list or any logos or anything else. How do you put a price on reputation and customer lists anyway? I don't think someone could afford it if I had to figure out the value of that.

if i was ready to leave detailing behind i would sell .. ive worked hard to build my client base and get my biz name out there .. it is worth something for my hard work and thousands of hours spent here and learning the trade . i would train the person and tell them what i did to be a sucess then id let it go and move on with something else and let it be

Absolutely if the money was right. I have to laugh at everyone that says that they would rather close it down than have someone else running the business that they built. I certainly wouldn'tr want to sell to some schmuck that would drive something I worked hard to build into the ground but money talks baby. Business is about money. Period. If you aren't in it for the money than why are you doing it? Love of detailing? Sure on my own cars but I get paid to detail other people's cars and that is why I do it.

Absolutely!!!!! I would take the money and as long as there is no non-compete clause written into the agreement, then you go open another detailing business under a new name. Business people do this all the time to make $$$$ ....do you detail for fun or $$$$$ ???????

Any standard business slae agreement will include such a clause. Anyone that would buy a business without one would have to be very, very stupid.

I see it this way. I have family and close friends that work with me and for me. I feel a certain responsibility towards them. They have been loyal to me during the first really hard year and they are still here. I fee lthat if I would sell that would be like deserting them. They count on me for and income and I do to. We have a very close relationship and we all act is if this was everybodies business. Also the fact that I have been working hard at this for many years and to just sell to someone all the hard work up front and just let him just get all the profits after my hard work. It is sort os heart breaking thought. I have been aproached by other bigger car wash/detailing businesses nearby and I have refused the offers. I guess that just tells me "if they are willing to buy me outit means that we are doing something correct" We have a long line of customers and I know some will be disapointed if I would do a move like that. Plus I love what I do and the contacts that I have made have been out of this world. So in a short version I would never sell.

Thanx for the comments folks.
Part of my detailing outfit includes a dealership (franchise) that is exclusive. Aparantly a huge multi-national has approached the franchise office looking for worldwide distribution to the general public instead of only through high end detailing rackets.
I didn't know this when I started the thread a few weeks ago, but there is a slight possibility I will have to think this through down the road.
I started the thread because I have a friend who worked for a detailing outfit that sold after two years, and the new owner sank it. To me, that's one of the downsides of selling, even though the original owner made some profit.

When involved with a franchise, MAKE SURE YOU DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!

Good Luck

I have a contract for exclusive rights to my entire province, so I'm okay legally. Even if I sell those rights, I can still detail, and can probably still offer the franchise product. It's just that I can do it for someone, or they can pick it up at UAP. People still want to pay me to apply the wax they can buy locally because I do it better and they don't have the time.
This is a new thing, and may not happen.
