Worst Civic I have ever seen

This is my brother in law's 07 Honda Civic. He had been taking it to the car wash since he bought it. He came to visit last weekend and after I saw it, I would not let him drive off in that piece of garbage, so I got to work. The paint was in the worst shape I have ever seen on a relatively new car, it was completely scratched, marred, contaminated, stained, etc. The paint was so bad that you could not even see the rock chips, which became very apparent after polishing. The car is a metallic black with a blue tint, which was no longer visible due to the poor condition of the paint, but it too came back after polishing. I spent about 6 hours working on it, but then he had to go, so I was unable to do the finishing polish to remove the haze left behind by Menzerna IP and was unable to add a coat of wax. Regardless, there was still a huge improvement. I will finish the job next time he comes around (I told him not to even think about washing it until then or to ever take it to the car wash again or I would kick his a**.) Oh, yes, the free washes at the Honda dealer also contributed to the state of the paint. He was so used to seeing his car in this condition that he did not even know how bad it was. He could not believe the difference after, especially after showing him these pics.

Here is my process:

Washed with Ultima Paint Guard Wash and Lowes GS

Clayed with Clay Magic

Polished x 2 with UDM, DAS Orange Pad, and Menzerna IP

After that, I was going to polish with Menzerna Micropolish with the DAS Blue Finishing Pad, then apply Danase Wet Glaze and Clearkote Carnauba Moose Wax via UDM and DAS Finishing Pad. Those steps will have to wait as well as the interior detailing, rubber trim, and tires. BTW, IP dusts like hell :soscared: . This stuff should come with a warning sign to wear goggles and a protective mask, I think I polished the heck out of my eyes and lungs. Nevertheless, it is good stuff.

Nice job detaildoc.

If all those white spots are chips in his paint then he should bring it back to the dealership and insist that they repaint the car for free. Since it is an 07 they shouldn’t have a problem with it still under warranty.

Thanks! I believe many of those are actually flakes, but I will let him know your suggestion, it would not hurt to try.

GOT DAMN!!! Are you sure that's an 07 Civic. Actually most Civics I see on the road have poor paint condition. Your bro's Civic looks like he drove that car for about 7 years!

HOLY COW even with a DSL connection it's taking forever to download the images! You should compress your images a bit more next time. From what I can see so far (before I told my browser to quit downloading the pics), nice recovery!

I hope he takes better care of it after seeing you put all that work into it! That thing was beat for only a year old.

It sure is. Who knows what the heck they use at that car wash to wash cars, but I could not believe my eyes when I saw it.

Sorry about that. On my 5 megs cable connection they load very quickly. I will compress them more next time though.

He will. I told him I would give him a good beating if he ever took it back to the car wash :D I also directed him to autopia and had him buy Ultima Paint Guard Wash, the waffle weave MF towels and other MF towels and a grit guard insert and to Lowes for the Grout Sponge and a couple of 5 gallong buckets. He already got his shipment. I also taught him the correct techniques for washing and drying his car. I am on a mission to convert him into an Autopian.

my 07 has the same paint, it looks nice when detailed but is very soft. I had rock chips on mine to but I had to get a new hood and bumper so i am getting a clear bra now. Honda would not fix my cars rock chips even tho the hood had more than a dozen after the fist 2 months, they just tell ya they have touch up paint for sale.

Man, that's like saying water is wet. Those before pics are nasty doc.

The car looks even worse when it is right in front of you. Yeah, IP dusts like there is no tomorrow, but the end result is great. It can also leave some haze when you use the orange pad, but nothing that Final Polish or Micro Polish couldn't fix with a gray pad.

Very nice work! That paint was in rough shape. I cant tell people enough how bad car washes are for their paint but they still keep going.

I have a Lexus and whenever I take it in for service, I make sure they don't wash it. Those free washes at the dealer are not free at all as they end up costing you hours of polishing later. Yet, the service adviser at the dealer told me that a lot of people take their Lexus on the weekend just to have it washed. :wall
