Wool Pads.

rydawg,

Would you recommend a Wool pad for heavy oxidation? What other products besides Presta would be effective with wool?

A wool pad made for compounding is all you need. Make sure it is white depending on the brand (3m, megs, etc.). Make sure it is a velcro back, unless you want to do the old fashion way and have the nut and bolt in the middle!:LOLOL

As for compounds and polishes, it depends on your finish and how much it needs. For mild surfaces a mild polish is all you will need (OC or OP if you have it). I have used OP with decent results, I just had some slight marring from that polish, but it's nothing a pc can't fix and turn into a show shine after the rotory. The reason why I love Presta Ultra cut light or Chroma 1500 is cause it was designed for wool and made for show car finishes with no fillers. The best part is it breaks down into a finer polish fast as you work it resulting in a smooth glossy finish. Spray a little water or QD spray and it breaks down faster and finer. Plus the instant gloss you get tells you when you are done. It's also not that aggressive and does not clump and jump. I have also been told by pro's and have seen pictures of this new stuff called "Surefinish". Some people have told me they like it better than presta and is really made for a newbie! I have not tried it yet, but I will soon. I have a thread I started a few weeks back about a compound/polish that I love and you will find more info there.

Which compounds and polishes do you have?

Also I was playing around last night with my new Presta Ultra cutting Creme Light with a pc and a lc yellow pad and tested it on a couple of cars again. Even with a yellow pad, it still took out defects and finishes down super!!!! A yellow to me is still not that aggresive, but it does an amazing job. These yellow pads are the best ever! I do not like the orange pads though...too stiff and grabby. Just my personal experiance with 3 different cars. Coming from a pro I would start with yellow lc pad and a pc and if this does not work then go to wool with a rotory.

I have the whole assortment of LC 6.5" DA pads and I can't tell much if any diferrence between yellow and orange on the PC. Maybe it's just me, but it seems that they both work a lot better after a few details than when brand new. Also, could be the products I use. There must be a million variables in this biz!

Dammm you are making me feel very old.

I started out with that setup, Like 20 years ago...

Heh heh, *you* feel old :lol 3Dog and I remember when Meg's first offered those newfangled foam pads :o Took a while for 'em to catch on.

rydawg- Those are some interesting sounding products!

rydawg,

I use mostly Menzerna FPII/IP, Optimum Old HC/OP (Not at all happy with the changes, I'll probably mix them in one batch), HiTemp EC / BlackfireFP.

Those polishes really cover all the compounding/polishing for non wetsanding finishes (1000 Grit On -?). Presta seems interesting, as with Sure Finish. Though those are Bodyshop polishes so I doubt they're formulated for Sun & User Friendliness.

Just wondering info on the Wool pads, though Professional products like the ones you speak of are extremely interesting.

I would get 3m or megs wool pads as they are both good quality. When it comes to rotory work, I never do in the hot sun. It makes an uneven hot surface any results may vary and should not be done. Pc work can be done in the hot sun though.

How did you like the Hi-temp extreme cut? I hear alot of people mixing with op for the pc and foam, but I am not sure how they willperform with a rotory and wool. I did try the hi-temp light cut with wool and it came out just ok, nothing spectacular. Do you have the new OP? If so how do you like it?

Don't feel old guys, I am 19 and I learned about a year and a half ago with a rotary and wool pad! I used the ones that just screw on... havent burned anything yet, but it is only a matter of time trying to go at a car with heavy marring i suppose. I did however just pick up a pc, pretty excited to go back to Cleveland to try it out during summer break!!

rydawg,

I'm considering either LC CCS Pads or Edge Pads. Can't lose for either one, just depends how much I want to shell considering I already have a backing plate. As Mobile in the hot SE Sun I have no control, though most of the time for rotary work the surface really needs heavy polishing. I find heavy paint correction via PC is a joke, totally love the rotary power and ease once you get in the groove. HT EC finishes amazing with OP, though I find it does have some added lubrication that keeps it somewhat "thick" on paint, easily correctable if you spread very very thinly and work it properly. EC/OP > BFSRC is one sweet combo setup. Not sure if I'll play more with any of the HiTemp products, more a question of abrasiveness with Pads/Rotary setup. HiTemp/TOL products are very good for the shop, but I'd rather play with a product that is used on all types of markets (Enthusiast,Shop,Professional, OEM). No I do not have the new OP, but I bet it is very good.
