With all the advancements in the pads and polish, are you guys reaching for wool less than in the past? Looking for users of some of the newest gear to chime in with opinions on wool and where it fits in your arsenal.

I never use wool except on fresh paintwork after wetsanding. Even then only on finishes I know the painter. There are so many finer grits of sandpaper, you can always get to the foam pad level of polishing. The main advantage to wool is less heat with alot of cut.
There are ways to adjust cut with technique and polish. When I first started we did everything with a wool and had to learn how to be almost LSP ready with it which was done with a 3M black foam.
I'm intrested in others uses now, thanks for bringing this up.

I have the edge system wool pads and use them on heavy correction jobs. Mostly I have them for SS paint, but have used them on clear coat cars that have major work to be done. I learned on wool, so I have very comfortable with it.

I rarely use wool, but every once in a while they are helpful. I recently did an Acura NSX (3rd one in 2 months) and was expecting the paint to be fairly soft.
The owner knew about a partial repaint by a previous owner but I found plenty of evidence of a full repaint. (It was a good repaint.) The paint was one of the hardest I have encountered and after some frustration with the time it was taking with all other options I had at my disposal I went to the wool. I hate the shedding, but the time spent cleaning up before the next stage was far less than it would have otherwise.

If you are just a weekend warrior or detailing your personal cars I don't think wool is necessary. There is not much you can't do just as well with other methods if you take your time.

I use wool a lot, but thats because i sand and buff fresh paint on a daily basis. I will also use it on cars that need heavy correction. Having very little heat is nice.

I still use wool/rotary/compound on a heavy cut jobs whenever needed. I love the feel of rotary polishing with a wool pad. The increase in surface area and ability to cut cool means that wool pads will most likely always have a place in my arsenal.

I do use them less then I used to ever since the Surbuf and MF pads came out, but as Todd noted above, they will always have a place in my arsenal. :bigups
