Wool pad questions?

David Fermani said:
That's kinda a loaded question in a way. With lots of experience, you *can* create a swirl free finish with wool, but it will never have the depth that a foam pad will produce. Even if you use a polishing wool pad on a light colored car, you should always finish with foam for the best possible finish. You *can* and *will* see a big difference.

Bottom Line = Foam will never cut like wool, and wool will never polish like foam. That's why we need both. If you do both correctly, an LSP will be trivial.

Where does he say he uses a PC to finish?

Thanks for everyone thinking of me on this one!! I was referring to using a foam pad on a rotary buffer to finish out *polishing*. I never polish or correct with a PC. I just use it to apply LSP!!

This is the level i want to get to and IMO im already there, at least have my foot in the door. I can already finish out with the rotary micro-marring/hologram free. At this point i dont see why anyone would finish with a PC.

OK, thanks for stating that, David. Sorry to add any confusion to the topic. I've asked this same question of Ryan and he has suggested finishing with foam on a PC.

Based upon what I've witnessed, I'm certain either strategy will yield great results.

So if i buy a wool polishing pad its basicly like a light cut foam? Light cut wool would be like a medium cut foam and so on and so on?

A wool polishing pad is nothing like a cutting foam pad. They really work very differently on every application. It's kinda confusing. You should have this in your arsenal:

Wool cutting pad - (I prefer LC white)

Wool polishing pad - (I prefer LC yellow)

Foam cutting pad - (I prefer EDGE yellow)

Foam finishing pad - (I prefer EDGE blue)

For *ultra* final finishing I use a black LC foam. (I only had to use it a handful of times)

Well if you guys don't mind me breaking in on your discussion, what size pads (wool) and backing plate are we talking about?

I'm only speaking about using Edge pads or the pads they make for other vendors. ( Auto Magic, Presta so on and so )

Blue wool would be like a green foam . The wool pads to have in your lineup , are blue and green , yellow wool would be for that severely neglected finish . They do make a Austrailian lambs wool pad for super fine polish work. I never used one so I can't comment on it .

Just remember wool cuts faster than foam . You won't need to work the panel as much with wool like you would with foam . :buffing:
