Wish me Luck !! I am going to need it

I bought this 97 Explorer Limited a couple of month ago. The paint actually looks quite good in the sunshine (from a distance)

The pictures were taken under the harshest light I could find to really show you what I'm up against. Just washed and clayed it.

All the white spots are actual scratches, paint is clean and smooth ready for the hard work.

Again, it was quite shocking when I looked at the pictures on the computer, it does not look like the same vehicle, scratches everywhere.

On Sat. I will DACP/Menzura FP/NXT all with a PC. This will be only the second vehicle I have done but have been lurking and reading quite awhile on this fine forum.

Here are 4 before shots:

I'll some followup pics in a couple of days

I think you will need more work than luck. I have a feeling a lot of those scratches won't come out, but I'd love to see you prove me wrong!

I'm drooling at the chance to hit that baby with a rotary!

Good luck!

Remember to really work the DACP on speed 6 with pressure and do a second coat if it needs it. If not, your chances of removing the defects won't be as successful. I'd do 2 coats of NXT to help hide any visible scractches left.

I forgot to add, I am going to put on the DACP with an orange pad, the FP with a white and the NXT with a grey.

One question though, is it proper to work the DACP in until it is dry and about gone. From the looks of it, I may have to do 2 or three passes with the orange. I am just not sure how 'long' to work it.

You should work it until it is basically gone for the best results, which is is the procedure for most polishes. I think you're probably going to want a more aggressive pad for that mess (LC yellow or megs burgandy.) I haven't been too impressed with the orange pad, but it can still work, it will just take more passes.

I would recommend a rubbing compound followed by DACP then FP then NXT. DACP is good product, but something with more cutting power is needed.

The paint of the 98 Explorer in the above picture looked a lot like yours without the deeper scratches. My procedure was:

Wash

Meg's Med Paint cleaner

Clay

3M PI-III RC Orange or (old)CMA yellow I cannot recall

DACP CMA Orange

3M PI-III MG with meg 7006 or CMA White

The little specs was just dust which settled.

Good Luck, I will being looking for the after pictures.

Great work, Dee! That has to be some of the worst cobwebbing I've seen! What products and process did you use?

This is the one I used DACP/3M SMR then followed it with the Turtle Wax Color Magic black wax because it also had a lot of clear failure ( looked like tiny chcken tracks all over a lot of it ) and any other LSP I tried left white residue in it.

This was done back on 20 June and I wash it every 3 weeks and you know it still looks good but the beading is dropping off.

Well I'm finally finished. This little project ate up my whole day.

My orange pad barely made it through the multiple passes that I did on this sucker. This is about the best I could get it with the equipment/product that I had on hand.

I think a more aggressive pad would have cut through the rest.

The first two pics are with the same harsh light as my first post, I've uploaded them so you can see what I could not get out.

As you can see, the deeper scratches are still there but much harder to see in 'normal' light. 90% of the spider web scratches are gone.

The rest of the pics, taken outside.

This is pretty harsh flash from the Canon Digital Rebel. It will show any and all defects.

The little white spots on the door below was another area that I could not do anything with the marks are through the clear and the paint, down to primer

Don't give me a hard time 'bout the wheel wells. That's all I'm doing in one day.

Later everyone, and thanks for all the tips I picked up from this forum. Could not have done it without it.

Don't know what happened to the hood picture, I guess downsizing it made half of the hood look messed up.

Oh wait, thats the cloud cover reflection

BIG improvement, the truck looks great! Did your orange pad only have the 5" velcro, because mine hardly lasted through a full car doing multiple passes with SSR2.5. One reason I'm using Meg's pads now.

Looks great. What do you on using to finish? I would use touch-up paint on the deep scratches and then machine polish. The roof looks good by the way.

You should post your pictures in the clcik and brag.

 :bow

That is an outstanding job! Most mere mortals wouldn't even have attempted to buff that paint out. ;)

Even though some of the deeper scratches remain, the removal of the lighter one, the cobwebbing and simply polishing out the paint dramatically darkened the paint and greatly improved the reflections. I really have to hand it to you on this one. :xyxthumbs
