winter SUV

okay well my father is looking for a new winter car (new england weather). The audi q6 is too big and ugly. The escalade is too big. He's never been a fan of japanese cars, probably because he used to drive the infinite fx-45 in the winter and it was awful. He also used to have a mercedes ML and hated it. What would you guys recommend is the best winter luxury SUV for around 50-60k?

Whatever he gets oughta be fitted with snowtires for the winter. I can't help but wonder if that's why he didn't like the FX-45. Sorry if that's off-topic...but most anything with 4WD/AWD should be OK for winter use if it has the right tires.

accumulator thats probably a good point, but yeah the FX sounded great and performed like a sports coupe....but it just didnt feel german, and it acted up a lot. I think hes leaning towards a cayenne or an X5, but i think the new x5 is uuuuuglyy.

IIRC the nex X5 has a weird shifter that he might have trouble getting used to (let alone that i-drive). The Cayenne might be good, the ones we drove felt like Benz sedans, which isn't a bad thing ;)

But all these things come with tires that simply suck in the white stuff...and I think people have problems buying an expensive SUV and then having to buy snowtires, so there's a little educating that'll need to be done ;)

yeah, i mean i have a new jeep cherokee and its awesome in the winter, but i think dad would just buy nice thin all season tires for it...

Well, trying to educate one's father can be an exercise in frustration, so I guess arguments like "one set of snowtires costs less than your insurance deductible" will fall on deaf ears ;)

What does he drive the rest of the time? Heh heh, good snows on a regular car can beat an SUV with all-seasons; my 4WD Blazer absolutely *sucked* in snow until I put winter tires on it (and then it was a blast).

he drives a carrera 4s lol....thats not moving in the snow

Yeah, I had a first-generation C4 and even with snows it wasn't very good (but I *did* try :D ). My RWD Benz was a lot better.

yeahhh i mean i told him to just get a grand cherokee limited you know not too much $, but he said hel be driving it 4 months out of the year he wants something nice, i dont really blame him, but the choices are limited for SUVs that arent girly, get good reviews, and cost under 60k

My vote is for a GMC Acadia or Envoy

The Acadias are very nice. They get up to 25 mpg too. A friend of mine had the Expedition EL Eddie Bauer Edition as well. That was a very nice vehicle. Honestly, as far as suvs go, I would either do the GL as I mentioned earlier, or go American Made.

It's not exactly 'luxury' but Subaru has made some improvements (larger engine, more power, smoother transmission) to the 2008 B9 Tribeca. And I think they got rid of that awful grill.

I agree with Booyah...I drive a 2004 4-Runner and got rid of my all-seasons for all-terrains (Bridgestone Duler Revos) and that truck is unstoppable. I live on a dirt road and even covered in snow I never have a problem. I have the Sport Edition with the V8 and it is full-time 4-wheel drive. Even in a heavy rain its great to have, plus you have the option of 4-wheel low (not that I have ever had to use it). I think the Lexus GX is on the same platform.

GL is made in Alabama by Americans. :)
