Winter Prep

Although it's still a little early, the reminders from Tire Rack and other sources have had me thinking. Just wanted to see what the rest of you are thinking about or going to do to prepare your vehicle for the upcoming winter?



I'm going to:



- get battery checked since it's a few years old

- temperature-test my coolant and adjust as needed

- fill windshield washer reservoir with "anti-freeze" washer fluid

- test heater and defrosters

- change oil and filter (German Castrol and K&N)

- wash, clay, polish, seal (everything possible)



I still have my scraper and gloves in the trunk from last year.



If I don't have a 4-wheel drive vehicle by then, I'm considering getting some winter appropriate tires.
 
No offense, but I find it amusing to see a Texans winter prep list, especially this early. :spit:



We've already had frost and have been using heat and defrosters for awhile (in the mornings). :chuckle: A lot of the nice cars are in storage or going to be put away in the next couple of weeks. It's time for the "beaters with the heaters" to come out.



I really need to get some time on the car and truck to get the last good cleaning done before winter. Hopefully, I can put on a few coats of Z2 before it gets to cold (Zaino worked great last winter) Thanks for the reminder!

Well, while we don't experience any "Minnesota" winter :) , we still see a rough average of 23" of snow and more ice than I ever care to see. It is still quite early, but we're starting to get into the 40's late night/early morning, so it means it's closer than we realize.
 
I guess it's time to really give this some thought since I'm in Illinois

Its likely I will be seeing snow in less than a month. I like to layer up the sealant/wax and make sure my windows have Poli-Seal/KAIO/Rain-x so the snow and ice slides off a little easier.



+All of the other regular car maintenance things...
 
Dallas has much milder winters than Amarillo so I really don't do anything beyond usual maintenance and listen for signs of a weak battery when starting my car on cold mornings.
 
We run low-temp washer fluid year-round and none of our vehicles call for different oil in the winter. All our services are up-to-date, there really isn't much that needs done to prepare for winter.



I no longer switch the A8 to 476S and I don't really do any winter's-coming extra detailing; they're all in maintenance mode already.



I do put heavy-duty mats in the dog-haulers so we don't have to change out of our winter boots.



Everything I'll be driving regularly gets winter wheels/tires (even the AWD vehicles) and BHB-equipped window brushes/scrapers.



(Hmm...haven't decided if I'll be driving the DenaliXL in serious weather, it's mighty nice right now and awfully big to redo :think: Oughta start shopping for winter tires if I'm gonna really use it, already have spare wheels.)



Other than that we just remember to take heavy warm boots/clothes if we're dressed up, just in case. We always assume that any vehicle can leave us stranded at any time, better safe than sorry, so we have emerg. stuff with us anyhow.



Take your cell phone and keep it charged.
 
no need for any type of prep here in Hawaii since we dont get winters like ya'll do in the continental US or any state with tropical weather, just the occasional heavy rain fall every once in a while.
 
I'll check the battery and a couple other things and throw on the steelies soon. I already got the winter armour on, 4 layers of Acryllic Jet, should be fun this year. I still have 3-4 vehicles that I want to somehow fit in amongst ~20 hours of work and full time school though, not sure how that's going to work yet.



We've had snow up in Manitoba already, and Regina in Saskatchewan just got 15 cm last weekend I believe. I can't wait for it this year, I want to go snowboarding so bad.
 
I will probably start going back to KSG instead of UPGP since I just seem to like it better in the winter. It seems to be easier to apply than in the summer (the KSG).



I should drain/fill my coolant, it's about a year or two overdue (but way under for mileage).
