Winter Paint Protection

Any particular brand of clay or polish your prefer? Is using clay and polish abrasive on your paint/clear coat? I have heard that clay if not used carefully marrs the surface and polish is abrasive and is meant to remove swirls/holograms and such. Fact or Fiction??

It all depends what type/grade of clay you are using and how you use it. Clay will not abrade away your cars clearcoat when used properly. You probably won't get much marring with something like Sonus Ultra-Fine, but that is meant for cars with very few bonded contaminants. I use Meg's Mild clay, with Last Touch as a lube. I do get some marring, even when I am careful. If your car has no defects to remove, you can simply use a paint cleaner like Klasse AIO or Jeffs Werkstatt Prime(both are non abrasive). If defects are present, a machine polish with an abrasive compound or polish is nessisary to remove defects.

A lot of clays are coming in different grades nowadays. Same for paint cleaners and polishes. Least aggressive products will not marr when used correctly. Keep reading or do a search for products in your area.

Zaino is fairly detergent proof. That would be my suggestion besides Collinite.

Alright guys...This is what I bought:

Meguiars Quik Clay Detailing System

Meguiars Paint Cleaner (step 1)

Meguiars Deep Crystal Polish (step 2)

Collinite 476S Wax

My plan is to spend the night at the do-it urself car wash with my products.

Wash/Dry

Clay

Step 1

Step 2

Wax

DROOL

How am I doing?

Your process should be fine. When you say you plan on spending the night, how long do you mean? If you do all the steps you mentioned, it will take at least 4-5 hours. The claying takes a lot of time because you need to do it slowly to get rid of all contaminants. The application of wax also takes a while (~20-30 minutes for an average car). Just make sure you have time to do all that :) Good luck, and post pictures after!

IMO 845 doesn't layer, the solvents would just dissolve the previous layer. Out of 1 layer of 845, I got 6 months all summer(April to October), no garage, no QD. I can't really see how any one could need anything more durable than that.

Interesting Bigpoppa, I only have one layer from summer atm, boosted with DG Aquawax. Do you guys think spitshining will work?-- Or are the solvents in 845 just too strong?

Thanks!

I'll go around 6 or when nobody is there (I can see the car wash from my house) and work till whenever it's done...with the aid of some redbull. It's a big truck so I am sure I will be working to at least 2 am. :getdown

Good luck with the Collinite. I'm also giving it a try for the winter here.....where the winters are a bit nicer on account of the Packers being so terribly bad and the Vikings being slightly better :getdown

Anyway, I've used multiple layers of Klasse and a topper of a few coats of Blitz wax in the past and after a winter of touchless washes, there's enough beading left to know I'm not fully at bare paint yet, but quite close. At least that's how it appears. Even if it's all gone, at least I had protection for a good part of the winter, which is better than nothing.

This winter I'm trying Acrylic Jett and Collinite 476 in hopes of more durability. I guess we'll see how it works. I'm really hoping the Collinite is all it's cracked up to be. Friggin snow and salt......
