Winshield Wiper Chatter...?

I've been hearing a lot about these PIAA wiper blades. Makes me wanna spend money on stuff I probably don't need..

They sound kick-butt though!

Also...

The "Bosch Micro Edge" wiper blades have graphite in them and are highly recommended by "chatter sufferers"

It would be worth trying the 303-blade treatment and/or doing a good "cleanup" on the glass (as mentioned).

What can be done to correct or stop windshield wiper chatter? I was driving in the rain last night and my wipers were chattering away like mad!

Any suggestions from you all knowing Autopians?

I have had the same problem. I eventually figured out the cause. I had wax residue on the windscreen causing the blade to jump and chatter. So I washed the windscreen with hot water which removes most of the wax, then I wash it with glass cleaner and dry it with completely clean, unused towel. Make sure the towel you use to dry the windscreen is not used on the rest of the body as the towel pics up wax and then leaves it on the glass.

For what it's worth, my chatter ceased when I cleaned the blades with rubbing alcohol. I remember reading somewhere (the e-book perhaps, or somebody's tip) that if you clean the blade repeatedly with alcohol until there is no black residue rubbing off on your towel, then you've removed all the flakey, rubber build-up.

No problems since.

From time to time, I also use a 20:1 dilution of Meg APC+ to remove diesel and road grime on my glass... (smoke belchers are rampant here)...

SIG is soooooo hard to find here...

Dana, I clean all the windows inside and out with 20/20, then I go over the windshield with Quikshine. If it ever looks like we may get any frozen precipition (not today though-heh heh, 70+ this afternoon-take that you yankees!), I will also try some Quikshine on the rear and side windows to see if the slickness makes ice formation either difficult or at least real easy to remove.

I think I will give the Speed Shine a try then.. just never really thought about it.. I do have Bosch wipers..

what do you think about RainX.. I used to use it... and liked it but havent used it in quite some time..

have thought about getting the glass polishing kit from Griots to do the car, trucks and shower door.. hmmm

Hope my question is not too silly, Guess_My_name mentioned to use NAPTHA. Do I use it on the wiper blades as well or only on the glass? And how would one apply it? I tried squirting some on the glass and rubbing with a cotton cloth, helped, but it would chatter again after some wipes. any help is appreciated, thanks! :)

If it turns out you need new wiper blades, I'll vouch for the Bosch Micro Edge. They work great, at least for the past two weeks.:)

I get about a year out of the Bosch's, in Houston, where they get to bake in high heat and humidity for at least half the year. I change 'em out before they chatter. Last time I replaced them, I went looking for the PIAA's but couldn't find them - guess just not presistent enough, but time was short as I was headed out on a road trip.

I'll post my $.02

First, don't confuse 303 Aerospace Protectant with 303 Wiper Treatment. I don't think applying the former to your blades would be a good idea. I've tried the latter, and it works well for 1-2 weeks. It comes in a little box with a small wipe in like a condom wrapper, and treats 3 blades. Only a few bucks for the pack. So maybe pick some up and slap it on when you refuel? It works fairly well.

PIAA blades. These are without question the best wiper blades ever made...by a mile! They're pricey but I think superior visibility is worth it. Had them on my last car and have nothing but good things to say about them. BTW...once you shell out around $50 for the pair, you can buy refills (about once a year) for like $7-$9 each. The cheapest place I could find them when I purchased them was here: http://www.ppsonline.net/PiaaWiper.htm

I'll be buying some when the blades that came with my new car wear out.

I use QS on all exterior glass and we've had frost here recently. I didn't notice any difference with thawing out (I always let engine warm up and get blowers & A/C running flat out as I hate scraping).

QS does make the glass slicker and beads off far quicker. Every other wash I put on a coat of AG glass polish which seems to prevent blade chatter

I clean the windshield with Autoglym Glass Polish (Autopia) and have fitted ‘PIAA Super Silicone Wiper Blades’ (Autogeek)

Wiper maintenance, ‘303 Wiper Treatment’

I tried ‘Bosch Micro Edge’ PIAA, IMO much, much better.

another cause of chattering blades: Wiper arms are not at right angle to the windshield. A minor tweaking adj. can work miracles.

Some auto mfrs have small devices to measure the angle when an owner complains about excessive chatter. Re-alignment is very straightforward.

Clean glass is important but I agree with Tom, the wrong angle can cause a lot of problems. Also make sure all the bolts etc are nice and tight, slackness can hinder the effective working of the blades.

I am amazed that this reason has taken three pages of posts

before mention.

If the rubber blade insert is not held at the right angle to the glass you will get chatter.

As the wiper moves through its ark, the edge flip /flops from side to side.

This flip/flop will not happen if the angle is wrong.

In many cases the edge is being pushed across the glass as opposed to pulled.

Once you understand the geometry involved, it is easy to test ( switch off wipers in mid stroke with ignition key.....and look ) and then adjust with careful bending.

Works every time even on old worn inserts.
