Windshield Wiper Arm Removal

I like to consider myself pretty mechanically inclined. I change my own oil, partially restored a '68 Camaro convertible, have installed a sound system or two and generally know my way around cars...

But for the LIFE of me I can't figure out how to take off the wiper arms on my Step Son's Acura. It's a '97 and they could use a coat of flat black paint. I don't want to risk over spray by painting them on the car.

Can anyone give me any advice for getting these god forsaken things off?? I need the fronts and the rear windshield wiper arms off.

Here's the car I am working on...

They make a windshield wiper puller. It works like a c-clamp. I got my at a local parts store - it was flimsy but worked.

Yup, some of them need specialized pullers. Check the hoonda forums, I'm sure there is a DIY method.

I looked in the technical manual I have access to (Chilton's) and here's the R&I instructions it gives:

With the wipers on, turn the ignition OFF when the wiper is at the mid-wipe position. At the tip of the blade assembly, mark the windshield with a crayon to aid in reassembly.

1) Lift the wiper arm assembly from the windshield and pull the retaining latch out.

2) Lift the wiper arm assembly from the transaxle driveshaft.

3) Disconnect the washer nozzle hose from the end of the wiper arm.

4) If necessary, remove the blade as outlined in Section 1 of this manual.

To install:

1) Connect the washer hose to the end of the wiper arm.

2) Position the wiper arm assembly on the transaxle driveshaft.

3) Push the retaining latch in to lock the wiper arm in position, then carefully lower the wiper arm and blade onto the windshield.

That's all the information they provide, hopefully it helps at least point you in the right direction.

Thanks Charlie !! Sounds like that may work. I stress the word sounds.... Wonder if I will still need the puller??

Marking the wiper arm position is a good tip. Guess I'll use tape since we haven't had a box of crayons in our house in about 10 years...

OR!!!

Just use the ETR Kit.

No need to remove and the coating will last longer than painting them.

Follow the normal directions, with one exception.

First clean the parts with the supplied New Car Prep.

Then, sand them with 400 or 800 sand paper, reclean with the New Car Prep.

When the surface is dry, apply the ETR per instructions supplied or look at the video on AI's(ValuGard) website, which does NOT include the sanding portion, as they only show for trim.

My Sebring convertible had the wiper arms done 6 years ago with this and they still look like new.

It works, and no masking, nor is there the spraying, etc, just simple prep work.
