Windshield Sealant

I have Meguiar's #20 polymer sealant on my car at present. I want to strip it to apply Blackfire and Z.

I emailed Meguiar's to ask how to do this. They responded with contradictory info. I emailed Sal. He said to use Dawn. Ron K. suggested paint cleaner. I am willing to try this, but I am nervous becuase it seems like it will actually remove my clear coat if I leave it on for too long. Bretfaz suggested Prepsol. None of the auto paint supply stores in town carry it. He also suggested a NAPA product. My local NAPA doesn't have it.

I went to Pep Boys this weekend and found a product by Klean Strip called "Auto Prep Automotive Surface Cleaner". It's an aerosol. The can says that it removes "wax, grease, bugs, tar and tree sap"

Will this remove my #20? I called Klean Stirp, and they responded that it "wasn't designed to remove a polymer, but it might, depending on the circumstances". They person I spoke to did seem to have much experience with polymers, and I think he was guessing.

Does anyone have any insight regarding whether this will remove my #20? I strongly suspect that it will. It appears to be a generic solvent, just like the ones found in one-step products like AIO and cleaner waxes.

Finally, I know that an abrasive such as SMR will definately remove the #20. My paint is in good shape, though, so I am extremely reluctant to use an abrasive on it. I would like to find a product that will remove the #20 chemically, without resorting to abrasives.

Do a dawn wash and then use either the Blackfire Gloss Enhancing polish or Z1. Any good polish would do. As long as the name doesn't include compound you should be okay. Glazes contain fillers that may prevent proper bonding of Blackfire or Z. I found Meguiars Medallion paint cleaner works pretty well for polishing and cleaning your paint and is not abrasive. The SMR is good also. Your Meguiars #20 will definitely be gone after dawn washing and polishing. Do not do a Dawn wash regularly. It affects your clearcoat somehow. (Do a search on Ron Ketcham and Dawn)

Yes, a thorough wash in Dawn will remove the #20. I have done this myself. You will be able to feel the surface "squeeky" (literally) clean after washing.

I have used Klean Strip for years. It won't harm clear coat, but I would go with the body shop standard: Prep Sol.= Wax and grease remover. Klean Strip is much stronger.

Barry, I have used a bunch of different sealants including DG 105, 501 and some beta products from them. They do a great job but eventually wear off from mechanical wear of the wipers. I want to try Opti Coat and Cquartz on it.

I never really have done anything to glass other than clean with Glass Cleaner Concentrate or NXT Generation Glass Cleaner.
