windshield rain repellent??

I've been noticing some spiderwebbing on my windshield(probably due to the Rain-X).

Not to mention it's a PITA to remove:mad:

Anyways, I was going to try the PIAA wiper blades(which coat the w/s with silicone), but I want something for the windows, too.

I've heard good things about Aquapel, but have never seen it anywhere.:nixweiss

Can anyone recommend a really good rain repellent that lasts a little longer than rain x, doesn't spiderweb or interfere with wiper operation, and doesn't cost as much as wax??

Sorry about the complaints, but I'm so mad at my Rain-X!!!!

Thanks a lot!

I’ve never had a problem with Rain-X. However I do know of mates who have, especially in regards to wiper chattering. The fix is to use the highest quality wiper blade available with metal backing, mainly due to its resistance to hardening from temperature fluctuations and UV rays, remaining soft, flexible and keeping tight fit. I use Trico in Aust, which is OEM to vehicles built here and abroad.

In reference to durability, a contributing factor is your windscreen wash fluid, I use the Rain-X washer fluid (pink in colour) which has a low percentage of rain-x in built. IMO normal / high concentrate washer fluid decreases Rain-X durability. I get about 5-6 months per application (2 coats at once without removing 1st coat).

The spider webbing you talk about I can’t comment on as I have never heard or experienced it. I can only recommend you clean, clean, clean your windows before applying rain-x and only use as stated above, a high quality rubber wiper blade without Graphite of Teflon coating and preferably with metal backing. Lastly don’t forget to clean your blade when you clean your car, overlooked by many people.

I hope this helps, if not I guess Rain-X is not for you.

Cheers

IMO Aquapel is the king of windshield rain repellents. Does not streak or smear like Rain-X (it can't since Aquapel is a cured resin) and does not play hell with your wipers. I previously used Rain-X and could not stand it, I finally stripped it off and went with Aquapel. www.speedymetalpolish.com carries Aquapel.

:xyxthumbs

AQUAPEL is also STP Vision Blade if you can find it.

It is the best IMO...no blade chatter and lasts for a long time.

I've had Aquapel on all of my cars now for 4 months with no sign of degradation yet! Repels water, dust and radio waves from alien motherships...... Way cool! :xyxthumbs

I don't know why everyone bags on RainX. I love the stuff. I've been using it for like 6 or 7 years now and I've never had any of this blade chattering or anything. I actually go out of the way to remove it like every 3 months or so. Maybe that has something to do with it. :nixweiss I love my RainX. If you put it on right then you never even get any of those hazing problems either.

I've started putting Zaino on my windshield, seems to work fine and don't have to have any more products than I already have.

I have many concerns with Rain-X. The product is basically a dimethal oil that you apply to your windshield. It does not bond to anything, it just sits on the surface. Since there is no resin system to Rain-X the coating never "hardens" and is able tp be moved around the windshield wipers, therefore it is very prone to smearing.

This oil can build up on the glass causing a haze appearance over time, especailly after it's been exposed to the sunlight for a long period time.

The dimethal oil also leads to premature degradation of the rubber on your wiper blades.

GINGER try Aquapel once.....experiment...come to the darkside.

I have used RAINX the Castrol accuvision stuff and find Aquapel to last longer, easier to apply, works better, and no chance of smearing, lasts way longer, does not affect wiper blades....

It is just a better product IMO.

I even have a STP vision blade wingy applicator thingy if you want to trade.

Hey, I'll try anything once. I love my RainX but I'll open my mind to other possibilities. The next time I'm out and about I'll pick up a vision blade and do a test. Half my windshield in RainX and the other half in Aquapel. Sound good? :)

You know, after a number of posts on application techniques from Jngr, I was going to try Rain-X. But I have found that EO 20/20 plus claying have made my glass super-water-repellent. I don't even use 20/20 except once a month or so now. I just scrub with my wash mitt and carsoap, and then dry with absorber followed by MF as per the rest of the car, and the rain runs right off the windshield at any speed over 30 mph. Probably not as good as Rain-X, but I'm plenty happy with the results.

Oh yeah, it rains here at least twice a week, so it's not like this only works in arid climates! :)

You go Ginger!!!! Boris is in your lab now waiting for the next experiment.

PS good luck finding the Vision blade...look in discontinued product sections at wally world etc.....

I wandered into a local Big Lots store looking for TW Tire Gel that everyone seems to be giving thumbs-up to . . . I couldn't find any tire dressing, but I did find about a dozen Vision Blades marked at $1.99.

Here's a tip: If anyone should find some of the discontinued Vision Blades, make sure to shake the package before purchasing. If you hear the faint sound of fluid being shaken around, good-to-go; if, OTOH, you hear what sounds like crushed glass rattling about, leave that one on the shelf . . . someone has "popped" the sealed container inside of the applicator, and the product has long since evaporated.

Good tip tort...I actually bought a broken one!!!! :doh

PS my Big Lots stinks...they have nothing for cars but some crappy towels that look like old t shirts in a bag.

Man, I should have read this post again before I left work. I picked up a Vision Blade at the dollar store for a buck. Its busted. :( Oh well. I'll hunt for one this weekend.
