Windshield issues

I am driving a 2005 Mustang GT and after only several thousand miles I found that the windshield has hundreds if not thousands of very tiny spots. These look like chips just very small. You cannot feel them, I even tried a razor blade thinking it was some kind of over spray on the car.



I drove another vehicle that same commute for over three years and nothing like this ever showed up. I am thinking that the glass is softer than normal as others are seeing similiar issues. I drive on pavement, and I am not seeing any front end chips out of the ordinary. So I cannot for sure say that they are chips. Can it possibly be something on the windshield that I cannot feel or scrape with a razor?



Does anyone have any information of products that may be able to "buff" these out? I am not sure really where to go with this.



It is more easily seen at sun up and sun down, or with direct light shining on the windshield.
 
Eastwood makes some stuff for polishing windshields, but I've never heard of anybody having great results with such approaches. Note that such stuff must be used with a rotary and is *VERY* abrasive (autoglass just laughs at "harsh compounds").



I merely accept that some automotive glass is fragile in this regard and I have our windshields replaced when they need it. It's almost become a regular replacement item on the cars we keep a long time.



Today's auto glass has a lot of plastic/polymer in it and isn't nearly as hard as glass used to be.



But it must be awfully frustrating to already have this on an '05 :bawling:



If you do get it replaced, be sure the shop doesn't scrape the paint in the windshield channel when they dig out the old sealer. If the do it'll lead to rust out. And, of course, make sure it doesn't leak.
 
I've had good results buffing out wiper scratches on the wife's daily driver with cerium oxide. One of it's jobs is to polish telescope lenses so it works well with glass.

Maybe do a search for 'cerium oxide' and see it it'll fit the bill for you.

I see on the web (http://www.micronmetals.com/cerium_oxide.htm) that there is "polishing" and "optical" grades, which one did you use?
 
Nothing you can do really except get a new windshield. I have never had this problem until I got my 05 Impreza. I have a lot of those little spots already too!
 
I'd sure like to hear about any more successes (or other results :o ) that anyone has with this.



JohnZ3MC's good results are the first ones I've heard about (glad to hear something worked for somebody).
 
i see those little spots every week, wish i could get em out but the owners probably wouldnt want to pay for that type job. acid rain is very easy for me to remove but those little chip like things that have no texture id love to know how to get em out. i think accum is right new windshield time. at least thats what im gonna tell everyone from now on.
 
It's not just you who has problems with the windshield. On several Mustang forums, a lot of owners of the '05 have complained about the quality of the windshield, particularly its resistance to small rocks and flying debris. My Mustang already has a couple of rock chips on the passenger side.
