After much trial and error today, I finally was able to remove the persistant road film from my windshield.
The process that was successful was using Glass Scrub with 0000
steel wool wetted with SC glass cleaner. The key seemed to be to keep the glass wet with the cleaner and work it for a few minutes.
I have not driven at night in the rain(which will be the final test) since this cleaning, but so far the glass is perfectly clear as the wipers go over it.
