Window Tint Question

I think too it depends on the type of vehicle. I have a sedan and the rear windscreen is tilted at an extreme angle. It's gotta be difficult to get it in there perfectly.

All of my defects are found in the back windscreen...

lyonsroar- Ah, I find that interesting. I've always figured that backlights were prone to aftermarket tint issues, if only because of the defroster grid/heat (especially after time/use).

It was Llumar Platinum film if that matters.

that's very good film. you'll be fine to clean your windows now, use a soft microfiber towel and a glass cleaner (invisible glass is a good one) that does not contain ammonia...

Well seeing that only around 4 of my strips work I don't think I'll have much of an issue!

:har:

I say, the longer you wait, the less chance of problems. It was cloudy and rainy when they did mine though if that has any effect. It's been about a month since I had it put on. I have one scratch that I've noticed and a few dusty areas/ tiny bubbles in the rear windscreen.

They say as long as you can't see it from 4 feet away you're fine.:woot:

Agreed on being patient to avoid troubles down the road.

But who said the part about 4 feet away? I found bubbles in my GF's tint (which was done at the same time as mine) and they were fixed pronto. They were tiny, and certainly not visible from four feet away. Maybe an eighth, up to a quarter of an inch in diameter. The guy said right away that it was wrong and would be fixed for free.

I love the tint. It's my first tinted car. I cant believe I didn't do it sooner. I cant believe everyone doesn't do it! It's amazing how cool the car stays in the hot July sun. And my interior is all black leather! Of course my tint is illegal in this state (35%) But what the hell.

If any of you havent tinted your windows yet, do it!

May I ask how much you paid for your tint jobs?

I did 2 cars at the same time so I got a discount. It was $220 each but I got them both for $190 each.

I went to a big car audio place that has an outside installer come in for tint. That's all he does is go to other peoples businesses and install tint all day.

Heh heh, depending on the weather you might have an even *bigger* issue, huh?!? But at least the tint shouldn't get cooked off very fast.

Well... [insert Accumulator's usual :nono rant regarding dark tints, LEOs, and such stuff here ]...At least remember to put all your windows down if you get pulled over, even if it's raining/snowing/whatever. Sorry, I have an utterly LEO-sympathetic view of this particular subject...ever approach a car with dark tint at night, not knowing what the people inside were gonna do?

Anyhow...[Accumulator climbs down off his soapbox]..

I've had tint on some vehicles that I really disliked, it cut down my night-time visibility too much, whereas the tint on others didn't bother me at all. Kinda funny how my experiences have varied in that regard.

With my post-LASIK eyes getting older, this is becoming more of an issue :sadpace:

My current project was purchased with dark tint on the rear door glass, and we'll see how I like it once I've run some night exercises with it. Said tint isn't in great shape anyhow (and sure won't get any better with the dogs back there!) so I guess I won't feel awful if I decide to razorblade it.

I've actually been pulled over twice (they were sweeping the area to collect revenue after the economic downturn depleted state and country resources - the governor actually said this!) And I roll down the windows (now), and as always make my hands visible (one on top of the door and one on the wheel). No one even mentioned the tint. I even talked my way out of one of the tickets!

Cool :xyxthumbs

I bet that putting the LEOs at ease that way has a lot to do with your not being hassled over the % of tint too.

And yeah, if you come across right there's often a lot of leeway regarding whether you get cited and/or what they actually write you up for.

so im going to phone tomorrow to get it redone, just wondering on both of my front windows there is a long scratch on the very top of the window but you can only see it in direct sunlight and its still hard to see then. Could this be from them removing the old tint or what do u guys think. I also think i might go for limo tint instead of 20% that I have now is it okay to limo tint over factory tinted rear windows.

They would redo it if I asked them to, I'm just not that picky.

Could have fixed those yourself if you followed up on the job the very next day. As the liquid starts to dry, you can get the film to stick a bit just by pressing on it and 'finessing' the bubbles out... along with running a finger along the edge of the rear window to press the film/adhesive into the 'dot matrix' pattern.

Then... you would have a perfect tint. That, or ask them to redo it.

Huge difference between not being able to get a perfect aftermarket tint versus knowing that you can and making excuses for not doing so. Just bad business to misrepresent the product like that imo.

They told me not to touch it for 4 days...:rules:

im going back to the tint place tomorrow do u guys think i should mention the top of window scratch to him even tho is really really hard to see during day. And do u guys think i should just keep the 20% up front or go for 5% limo all the way around.

I'd at least mention it if only to see how he reacts/responds.

I find really dark tint cuts down on visibility too much, especially at night. Consider the "what if...", especially if it's illegal in your area; sounds like some ambulance-chaser's dream to me, besides being a reason for LEOs to hassle you. Yeah, I know...I sound like a real stick-in-the-mud :o

Oh well, now you know!

Tint should have a warranty... take it back and get it perfected. I know I am not allowed mistakes at my job, so I don't make allowances for the laziness of others either.

okay i phoned another tint place to get all my windows done. and they said they remove the roll down windows and then tint them that way with a heat gun or something like that. they said thats its the best way to tint. is this true or whats thanks

I actually think I shamed him. I said - look I know the county needs funds but come-on, I know you're just doing your job and genuinely want people to be safe but lets be serious here.... etc. And he started getting all defensive and nervous, explaining himself. :nixweiss

I've never heard of that but if true it would be pretty cool. It would have to cost more money though. If not I'd have to assume it's BS.

Same thing as leaving it alone for 4 days in the sun.

And really, none of it is strictly necessary if the tint was properly installed in the first place. If they get enough of the moisture, and ALL of the air bubbles out, you can roll the windows down immediately. This bit is just to let the water evaporate so the adhesive can cure to the window, but again if they get enough of it out and do a good enough job you really don't have to worry.

Best bet is to read as many reviews and get recommendations from other enthusiasts in your area.
