The reason for using terry instead of foam pads is because a folded terry cloth can distribute pressure more evenly, and because the cloth is more abrasive, making swirl removal more effective.
As for drying, I think the first pass is done with cotton terry towels to absorb the bulk of the water, then the second pass with microfiber.
