Why use terry cloth towels?

phil7533, when you just want to pose a question to one Autopian, you should send him/her a PM instead of posting it on the public boards.

FWIW --

I thought Scottwax had previously asked that people start a thread, so he doesn't have to answer one question many different times. I don't remember which thread I saw it in though

Yeah your right, thats what he told me awhile ago when i pmed him about something. As for terry cloth, I believe he uses microfiber towels now if I am not mistaken.

Terry cloth is used for the application of abrasive polishes, like DACP and swirl free. The reason for using terry instead of foam pads is because a folded terry cloth can distribute pressure more evenly, and because the cloth is more abrasive, making swirl removal more effective.

As for drying, I think the first pass is done with cotton terry towels to absorb the bulk of the water, then the second pass with microfiber.

Guys... you need to remember that terry is a weave and MF is thread size. It's not a matter of one over the other, it's like saying "tire or rubber" or "rims or chrome." Hence, you have terry made from MF sized yarns.

I believe you can apply more even pressure and generate more heat with a terry cloth when using an abrasive. I don't think it is a good idea for wax.

If so, then ... "my bad."

Don't at all mean to thread-jack here, but let me just tell you my reaction. (And it's one I've had from the beginning -- long before I was a moderator.) When somebody asks a question directed only to one person, it sorta dismisses the accumulated wisdom of the entire Autopian community. Scottwax posts some really great pix here, but one benefit of the Autopia community is that we have people with lots of knowledge in many diverse areas of expertise. IMHO, one robs oneself by not consciously/openly drawing upon that wider knowledge.

Hope that didn't sound TOO much like a sermon. I don't intend it to be. But I do want you to understand why I reacted as I did.

*ding*ding*ding* Correct-a-mundo! :up

Also when drying, terry cloth has a deeper nap that draws any dirt left on the paint deeper into the towels. Glad to see someone pays attention! ;)

I use microfiber for wax/polish removal exclusively.

Lynn-I much prefer that if the questions involve detailing that it be posted so I can answer it once for everyone who may have the same question. It can get frustrating to get the same questions over and over and try to answer them individually. This way the answer gets out to a lot of people at once and if I get asked again, I can link the thread.

In that case, Scott, my recommendation would be that the person pose the question generally (in this case, something like "why use terry instead of MF?" or "when to use terry vs. MF?), then PM anybody s/he really hopes will answer it. I've done that myself lots of times when I have a question, but am especially hoping a particular person will see it and respond to it -- e.g., I'll PM Mike if I post a Meguiar's question, PM forrest on Mothers questions, PM Accumulator on tons of my old-car questions, DFTowel on towel composition, etc. For the reasons I explained above, it just seems "dismissive" to post a private question in a public forum.

And, I trust you understand, this is not at all about you, Scottwax or phil7533. I've seen the same kind of threads posted by or directed to other members of the community. This just happens to be the one that got my attention while I had time to reply at length.

And -- again -- sorry that the thread-jack is continuing. But this does seem like an issue that's worth sharing with the community rather than only via PMs.

Lynn-I believe the way I stated it in another thread was for the person to make a thread (so others could get a crack at the answer also) and then PM me the link.

Agreed, Scottwax. That's exactly what I was suggesting. So I guess the problem is in the interpretation folks are making.

Lynn and Scottwax... I agree with what you're saying, although I was just referring to another thread I had read. Even if someone has a question for a person, but others could possibly answer, a thread could be better, so everyone could get the answer, or contribute... okay, long winded, in short, I agree :)
