Why tape off?

I know why you tape the trim and area's you do not want the pad to hit. What I have seen is some people taping off, say the hood, in 2-4 different sections. I first thought this was for the 50/50 pics you guys love to post (and they look amazing too), but some people seem to use this taping off as part of there process.

If this is the case and you polish section 1 and then section 2 and then pulled the tape, wouldnt you have to do a thin strip of buffing where the tape was?

Am I wrong about this taping off section, is it only for the 50/50 pics?

Thanks guys, for all the info I have learned from this site.

Where can I see someone doing this? If true it makes no logical sense at all. Unless they are testing various products or methods and blocking off sections for visual comparison.

visual comparisons...

seeing what works better under the same circumstances. I have done it to compare optimum compound, megs 83, and menzerna SIP. then whichever looks/works better, I do the whole test section over again with the winner, then proceed with the rest of the car!

Those have all been taped off because of the clear bra. Like this one that I did:

Street's right. It's pretty common for those high end vehicles to have them installed by the owner. A good way to protect your investment.

Man, that Lambo pic really makes me thing I need to work on my taping skills hahaha/
