Why do I even bother with sealants and wax?

we once polished a black accord (check out my gallery) and applied 3 coats of Z5 the first day then another 3 coats the next day, on the third day, the car had 2 bird bombs the size of a fingernail (pinky), the birdbomb was sprayed with Z6 then washed and guess what, it etched right through the Z coat...

Yeah, sorry to hear about that as well. :(

How much damage a bird dropping will do DOES depend on several things. Including:

1) Bird's diet (see Scottwax's post)

2) Surface temperature

3) Quantity :p

4) Time dropping was allowed to sit on paint.

Sometimes you'll run into truly horrible stuff that will eat through anything. Other times it can sit there for a long time and not cause much damage. Letting it dry out and high heat are the worst things though, so that's why it's important to get it off the car ASAP, one way or another.

Dont Forget

5) How high they are in the air when release, the higher they are, the more velocity it's generating... the more speed it has, the deeper it's going to etch. :)

Carry a spray bottle of water and baking soda in your car, spray it down immediately. I've never had bird crap work that fast on car.

I always keep a bottle of Meguiars Final Inspection and a microfiber towel in the car for those surprise bird droppings!

I also carry a small squirt bottle of QD spray and a whole duffle bag full of microfiber towels. Unfortunately, after the crap sits for over an hour in the sun and dries on to a hard texture, it has probably already done its damage. It takes a minute or two for the QD to soften it up just to get it off without damaging the paint further.
