Why did this happen?

i was claying the other day and my clay turn in to a really soft clay that way breaking off chunks and it was soaking wet. I wonder if its one my car is way too dirty which i new with all the pollution in LA or 2. my car was hot even though my car was under a shade. or 3. i put way too much lub which i used a little of Z-7 and water.

I don't know the Zaino acronyms too well. Is Z7 the shampoo?

There was a theory a while back that using a shampoo dilution instead of a dedicated lube might cause the clay to dissovle in your hand.

well, i thought that too. so i used the other clay bar i had and just used water and it was just fine. So i thought my concentration was too strong.

There are soft gooey clays and stiff clays, it sounds like you have a gooey one. Stiff ones cut the contamination and gooey ones remove contamination a little better because the stickyness grabs the bad stuff and lift's it out. I prefer firm bars because they are easy to use, IMO. And I don't think there is a measurable difference between the two but it makes sense that sticky ones might remove more gunk. IMO if the car is that bad it needs polishing anyway so that's why I like firm clay better. Clay Magic is a firm bar and I have never heard of your problem with this product.

oops this one, extra lube for only 2 bucks.

These ones are 12% off but if you buy the Sonus clay they are 20% off. I have never tried Sonus clay, maybe someone who has can say how it works and is it firm or soft?

What clay are you using BTW?

I also use z7 for clay lube and never had that happen, I would think your problem is coming from something else.

Hey, where is Downey CA anyway? Sonoma County here.

Some clay/shampoo mixes just don't work well, and the clay is what suffers. I've had Griot's clay turn to "soup" with some shampoos. Just gotta find a combo that works better.

BurlyQ-I use the Sonus clay to spot-clay with every wash. I dunno just how to describe it as different people see things differently, but I'd say it's pretty firm, especially when it's cold. Feels sticky in my hand but doesn't seem too sticky on the panels. Sorry I can't describe it better, but I don't want to lead you astray by saying the wrong thing. Funny I find it so hard to describe :o It does seem quite mild though, does't remove my LSP. Doesn't dissolve in a mix of Griot's Car Wash and also works well with dedicated lubes.

Accumulator,

I didn't take into consideration there may be clay inbetween soft and hard, and it sounds like maybe Sonus fits into that catagory. That might be a good thing, I'm going to have to give it a try.

TY, Q

i was using Mother's clay bar. i wanted to use clay magic at first but i heard and read that clay is clay and there are no differences. I guess i heard wrong, Downey is actually 15 min away from LA and 20 min away from Huntington beach.

I find the temperature of the clay makes a huge difference. I've been using clay from TOTL and in the hot summer it's pretty soft and sticks to your fingers but in the winter it's very firm and difficult to fold over itself.

Burlyq .. I use the Sonus and Blue Magic clays and they are very similar in terms of hardness and 'stickyness'. Maybe the Sonus clay is slightly softer and a tad more sticky but it is a very close call. If you like Blue Magic I think you'll like the Sonus clay. The red plastic box the Sonus clay comes in is very useful too for storing the clay in between uses.

Too much lube. Use just enough to reduce friction to zero. Re-lube only when necessary.

Don't feel bad. This has happen to me also with several brands (labelled) clays. Everytime I was rushing and using more lube than necessary. My lube of choice is Z7 ( 1-2 caps in 1 quart of water).

Dvs Ndn- Yeah, for something based on a single patent and where any differences should be insignificant, it's surprising how some of us have developed such strong preferences!

That's good to know, thanks for the direct comparison.

So the Sonus box is *red* now, huh?

Burlyq- Note that the Sonus clay is scheduled to be replaced by one that DavidB describes as "having more cut". Might want to try the current version and stock up if you like it. I still miss the old "Autopia Block", "elastic" clay. Learned my lesson about how products come and go (and, heh heh, they usually *go* about the time I decide I like them :D ).

i thought that the amount i used was reasonable especially since i waited real long in between my claying. So is the suggestion in here is to go for the Sonus clay??

Yeah, clay will behave differently when it's very cold/hot. Some of us do stuff like wrapping the clay in aluminum foil and putting it in our pockets. Body heat will soften it and it doesn't stick to foil the way it can to plastic wrap.

I dunno about other people, but *I* sure like the Sonus clay. Note that it might be a bit mild for some applications though, otherwise David wouldn't be coming out with something more aggressive. I'd certainly think it's good to have on hand though, or at least worth trying. But then I haven't tried all that many clays.

me either i only bought Zaino and Mother's clay bars and only when using the mother's did mine fall apart and when i used zaino my started flaking off.
