Why are my pads not holding?

Hey all

Long time!

I went to deatil my car this weekend and found that my pads were no longer sticking to my backing plate. It seems like the hook and loop system is just not working. Any idea what it could be. The plate and pads are only about 2 years old and have been used less that a dozen times. I used Megs, DC and edge pads.

Which backing plate do you have? And how old is it?

Backing plates do wear out after a couple years, sometimes sooner depending on how often you use the polisher. I'd say yours may just be worn out...

I have a megs backing plate. Its to the point where the pads are falling off which is dangerous while poslishing and scratch repairing on 6

My Meguiar's backing plate seemed to lose its grip after a couple of years. It hadn't been used a lot, but I'm sure it was more than a dozen times. I replaced the backing plate, (don't recall whose, but it probably was from Dwayne), and the pads work fine with it. In fact the replacement backing plate grips so well that I'm a little concerned that it may strip the Velcro from the pads when I remove them.
I didn't pursue it with Meguiar's, but they might replace the backing plate even though it is older. It may be a stretch, but they do have very good customer service. At least, IMO.
