Why apply wax over a sealer?

Why do folk apply both a sealer AND carnuba?

I either seal or wax.

Some sealers, like FMJ, don't look very good with a wax top coat.

The aesthetics of a vehicles appearance is very subjective to say the least (beauty is after all in the ‘guy’ of the beholder) the only best Wax or Sealant that really matters is what looks 'best' to you...

A sealer typically provides more longevity than a wax (carnauba) so a sealant is used for longer protection.

Depending on the paint color and sealant used, some feel that the look is "sterile" or not as warm or deep as a carnauba. To get the best of both many of us top a sealant with a carnauba wax for looks as well as more protection.

I agree, I have yet to see any physical difference in topping a sealer.

Maybe for dust issues with some of the oilier polymers, or as a limited benefit protective barrier for the polymer. Other than that, its a waste of time for me......

I dont remember the last time i used a "wax" as a LSP....

Looks.

Some sealants (Zaino is my own experience, although I see many guys topping EX-P) have a plastic-y look that lacks depth and warmth. Topping with a carnauba wax adds that extra dimension, but would be mostly for looks, as any sealant should outlast it's carnauba counterpart.

At first I thought I wouldn't be able to tell the difference, but...

I applied SG 3-4x on my car a while back, no wax topper. I took a look at my car in the sun and it did look sterile like others have mentioned. Btw, my car is dark grey, so it might not be as apparent for lighter colors. So, I topped the SG with a coat of S100 and my car had more depth to it, a more liquid look. I'm no super-finicky Autopian, but I could tell the difference.

Yeah! That's it. We just need something to do. Or put it another way... Waxing is an addiction and we just need another fix.:wavey

Seal in the paint then top with a LSP to add a high gloss shine for the finish.....NO NOT REALLY its because we have too much time on our hands and don't know what to do

Cuz, autopians just like applying stuff:D

Exactly. :bow

Thanks goodness I cured this addiction by improving my prep ( improving the finish as a time occupier) and creating "real" depth and wetness that most any LSP type is just used to protect this prep.

Will the wax topper reduce the durability of the sealant? For instance, if you top Zaino with S100 and the wax is gone in four weeks, would the topped Zaino at this four week mark be as slick as untopped Zaino at the same four week point?

~One manâ€â„¢s opinion / observations~

The â€Ëœotherâ€â„¢ reason for applying a wax (LSP0 is as a renewable protective coating to automotive paint is to act as a sacrificial barrier against air borne contaminants; this barrier can be reapplied when the wax has eroded. So if anything it will prolong the durability of a sealant

~Hope this helps~

If, and only if, the carrier solvents in all wax preparations has a zero effect on the crosslinking of the sealant microstructure. This is a possible case where 1+1 may not equal 2. :nixweiss
