I'm a n00b. I think I have taped trim on most everything.

I'm working on a rough 91 Nissan that has sever marring I won't be able to get out. I've taped off all the trim to prevent having to clean it. I started without taping yesterday and quickly learned the error of my ways.

If in doubt, tape it up. You are not hurting anything by doing that.

I typically only when I using certain products which I know will stain or when using the rotary or doing any other serious polishing. I view taping as a cheap insurnce policy.

GTScott,

In your pic, did you tape up that Acura because you were going to use a rotary or product that would stain the trim? Or did you do this to avoid build up in the crevices.

I have a Honda Accord, so this gives me an idea of what a tape job on mine would look like.

^^^ great point ^^^

great point gonzo, great practice=great results.

not to mention if youre mobile like me you wouldnt believe how many people the tape attracts just to ask me if im painting the car. which leads to telling the curious onlooker of why im taping and exactly what it is im doing to the car. gains interest and ensures professionalism.

I tape depending on the car, amount paid for the detail. Some cars really don't require it simply because the design of the auto allows you to buff it without any concerns of scuffing the molding.
