I would like any advise on fixing the problems listed in the link above. The front end of the car looks pretty nice for the most part with the exception of swirl makrs on the hood. Ill be working on that this weekend. However, the rear of the car, and especially the trunk/spoiler are very faded.. and the spoiler just looks bad.

whats teh best way to clean up that spoiler and to help bring back shine to the back side of my car? Im not familiar with most products.. so you will have to talk to me like im 4. And Im not scared of using harsher type items on my car. I dont plan on keeping it long. So itll be good practice. But, if i can make this car look better for the next few months that Ill have it, ill do it.

Thanx in advance.

PS: there is a good deal of reflection in those pics due to a light rain we just got and it kind of hides some imperfections on the spoiler . I wiped it off as best i could quickly. If better pics are needed ill post some tomorrow.

Looks like the clearcoat is failing but I am no expert.

Anyone else?

Not much you can do if it is other than repaint I am afraid.

Polishing with a cutting pad MAY make it look better but I wouldn't hope for too much.

Sorry.:nixweiss

What kind of car is it? Year?

As Deemo says, it looks like clearcoat failure. If you don't care about preserving the clear, I would attack it with a rubbing compound or heavy cut cleaner, and follow up with a swirl remover with a random orbital buffer.

You're going to need to test out an inconspicuous section to see what works.

If you don't have a buffer, you're not going to remove the oxidation and the scratches on it.

Many of those in the 1st pic (the other didn't come up) look like bird bombs, sap and tar that may have been on there for much to long a period of time. It looks more like etching than clear failure.

Go at with some pretty harse stuff or try wetsanding the entire area. Worse case, you make a mess of it, you were going to need to repaint anyway. Best case, you make it look slightly better but there is only so much you can do. Many of the stratches look very very deep so compound probably won't do much. You can try measuring the thick before you do anything but it does look like the clear and paint have been compromised.

Sorry. But that only my opinion. Great car to test products and technique though!

thanx for the help so far guys.

yes it is a good car to test on. Its a 93 MX6.. bought it when i was 16. Im tired of it now. After 6 years its just time to move on. But I have to wait until I save enough $$ to get the ///M3. (E36)

Im really willing to try anything. If I make it look worse.. oh well. I dont really care. But if I can make it look better.. well good for me. I wont complain.

I know it is not 'bird bombs'. I always wash those off as soon as I can. As for sap/tar.. i dunno.

My original thought was that it was the clear coat. I just wasnt sure.

Any more opinions would be great.

Thanx again.

You are probably not looking to spend a lot or anything to maybe make it look better, right? Others might have suggestions on realitivly cheap, easy to find products, but I think meguiar's scratch-x product would work ok if you are going to be working by hand. The price is ~$10 maybe...not real cheap, but cheaper than some other things, and not completely worthless if things don't work out.

The paint is cracked and checked. You could try to make it look better with some glazes but only a repaint would cure it. The M3 is a great choice, I have a 98 sedan.

yeah, i honestly thought it just needs a repaint. and no, im not going to do that. heh

and yes, I have fallen in love with the E36 ///M3.

I plan on getting a 96 coupe. Color of choice.. Estoril Blue. By far my favorite color on any car, period. But hey, thats just me. :D

I plan on being able to purchase the M sometime this fall.

Thanx again for all the help
