Hi,

Which sander can I use for car polish? I bought the Stanley sheet sander Stel421 and tried to use it. It does not give the finish that I want. Gave the dull finish and you can see the polish spread is not even :s anyone can advice?

For automotive polishing and correcting you will find these are the machines designed for this purpose:

Porter Cable 7424XP DA (Dual Action)

Griot's Garage Polisher DA

Meguiars G110 DA

Harbor Freight DA

HD Polisher DA

Rupes 15 and 21

Flex

Cyclo

Note: I believe these are all Random Orbital as mentioned by Accumulator--just not sure if the Cyclo is RO. The Rupes has a much larger orbit than all the others, the Flex has forced rotaion and the Cyclo uses two small pads instead of one.

You bought this to polish your car?

Pwaug posted a great list, if you are on a budget, the Harbor Freight DA can be had for about $50. You'll easily spend over that for polishes and pads.

Thanks for the reply Pwaug & Dan.

Yes that is the machine I bought. Can I know what DA & CO stands for? I should have asked here first before wasting mu money on the wrong sander.

While it used to be common for people to use *random orbital* sanders for polishing, those machines had a fair share of shortcomings in that application. You really should get a machine designed to polish cars.

DA= Dual Action (there is some debate among the pedantic about whether or not these machines are truly Dual Action or not but don't worry about that.)

RO= Random Orbital. This is what you want, and you want one that accepts backing plates and pads (the plate(s) mount on the machine and the pads stick to the plates with velcro) in the range of 3" to 6.5". That's a huge range but most people use sizes around 5.5"- 6.5". DO NOT get one of the inexpensive machines that takes big pads (e.g., 10").

Short answers IMO: Somewhat expensive- Get the Griot's Garage 6" electric random orbital polisher; rather inexpensive- Get the Harbor Freight unit.

Thanks Accumulator.

Bought the Black&Decker KP600 RO. Any tips on using it? Still new and learning in this detailing world.

So the Stanley sander Stel421 is no use?

Return it, as it is nothing more than a wax spreader.

If you want to "polish" paint you need a machine that is built for and has the pawer to do so. The list that Pwaug gave is very good. I personally would highly suggest Porter Cable 7424XP -or- Griot's Garage Polisher DA. And using them with 5.5in polishing pads.

Unfortunately, that is the correct response. Seriously, don't try to actually polish the car with that, you'd really regret it.

And that Stanely is not appropriate for detailing work.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
