Which Prime to use?

My Klasse All in One is on its last legs (forgot when I even bought it was so long ago).

Have to say its the #1 detailing product I've ever used but they changed formula and I'm going to give Werkstatt a shot since I was so impressed with Acrylic Jett Trigger vs. Klasse Sealant Glaze.

There are several choices of Prime. 'regular', Acrylic, Carnauba and Strong.

Not sure which to go with. My BoxsterS is 6 years old and parked outdoors all the time.

Some light swriling that I notice under the street lamps. I don't touch the paint between washes and always follow up with a spraywax/quick detailer so the paint is almost always shiny and rainfall always beads.

I'm inclined to try Strong since its six years old now but since I don't seal more than 3 times (tops) a year, I'm debating between Acrylic as well since I want it to last on its own for a long time. Carnauba Jett is appealing because I want to mix it with my OCW spray as suggested by Scottwax.

The polish will be doing double duty with my wheels which I clean at least once a week. But I don't really care which Prime goes on the wheels since they have to stripped clean so often to remove the evil brake dust.

I haven't used them yet - But will be in the exact same situation next season. My trusty AIO (pre voc) is almost completed as I use it under everything. I too will not seal more than a few times and one car of three is outdoors 24/7. Based on all the readings I would suggest Prime Strong for the cleaning ability and protection (as it seems to be similar to Acrylic but on steriods).

Since I always top AIO/Prime with either a carnauba or a sealant, I think I'll try out the Prime Strong to get the best cleaning power possible. If I were going to one step, I would go with either the Carnauba or Acrylic.

P.S.

speaking of standalone...

With constant reapplication of waxes/sprays by most Autopians, do we even need a sealant?

Is as sealant worth the effort/expense? Why not just go from prime straight to wax and a sealing type quick detailern (that works over everything) like FK425 or similar?

Good point racingbeat, I agree with you. Infact there are many times that I go straight to my wax (like currently on my E500) and use qd/spray sealant. The only thing I can think of is that (1) old habits (2) some don't enjoy/or have the time to re-apply.

That's exactly what I do on my GTO. Swirlbuster (which has acrylic protection in it) topped with a wax, and touched up frequently with a QD. I rewax that car a couple times a month.

On my Z06, I have just found that sealants give it a better appearance since it's metallic silver.

Yeah that's where I'm leaning in the last two hours LOL

p.s. I haven't sealed since in nearly 7 months. I'm thinking sealants will become redundant to Autopians in the near future. I see more quick detailing sprays with

Sealing ingredients cropping up.

I think I took this pic in August, so five months without sealing and frequent quick detailing.

I think you may very well be right about this.

More and more folks are using spray-on products with the ease of application of a QD but with the protection of a true LSP (like Werkstatt AJ, OCW, Duragloss AW, Sonus AG, Zaino Z8, etc.) on a very frequent basis after washing their vehicles. When you do that, having an underlying sealant may very well be redundant/un-necessary.

I guess it depends on how well these spray sealant bond to the base wax. I personally love AG, Z8, OCW, etc.

You could simply use a good universal all-in-one paint prep product like Klasse AIO or Werkstatt Prime a few times a year and then just use spray-on QD type LSPs on top of that base after washings.

Or you can all stop complaining about redundancy and detail you cars once per month like true Autopians with OCD. :woot2:

If you consider the average car is kept about three years then sold, most of this is relatively useless anyway, accept for pride in the shine and feeding the urge. Of course a full detail before you sell it to get the higest value possible.

95% of car owners think we are crazy and do just fine driving and selling their cars with very little in the detail department. Now, I don't agree of course, and am with you guys all the way, and the redundancy is a good point.

I guess I just get crazy when I hear a reason not to detail. If you plan on shocking my system like that, please give alternative activities so I am not lost when not redundantly detailing my car. :getdown

Oh, also, I love prime strong, its a great based for all sealants/waxes and the cleaning power is sweet. Try it on chrome as well. Works great. Just don't use too much, it is a bit of a pain to get off if it is on too think. PC application is the best in my opinion.

Also, do it twice, just to be redundant. :)

The point is not that detailing in general to an obsessive level is uselessly redundant - this is Autopia after all.

The point is merely that if you are going to be putting spray LSPs on your paint after washing on a weekly basis as part of your obsessively redundant detailing routine, you could probably omit putting a traditional sealant/wax on your paint.

I went with Prime Strong. Jeff says it's basically Prime at 120% strength. Extra Acrylic protection, and a slightly stronger polishing agent

yep, I'd like to hear a single coutner point to this. Why are Autopians buying sealants at all??? :nixweiss

Sounds like to me you need Prime Strong and then AJ. That should give you a nice finish!

I agree.

Just FYI, 04Cobra deserves the credit for OCW/CJ mix, I stole his great idea! :LOLOL

I do for customer's cars, even the ones I wax more often-mostly for metallics and lighter colored vehicles because I think sealants look best on them.

Very interesting. I would think the winter would be a good reason as many times I cannot wash the car and apply spray on a weekly basis/or by weekly basis.

YEP, I agree. Polish and sealant in the spring and then monthly spray waxes until Novemeber when you apply a good sealant for winter.
