Which motion to use for applying polish and wax? Circular versus horizontal/vertical? I heard circular motion can add swirl marks.

I use circular, both by hand and anytime I use the PC/Flex to apply and have never noticed any ill effects. I've also tried the straight line method and found that I am less efficient when using it. If you're instilling marring during LSP application, you really need to review your process.
 
I use straight line motions - up and down on vertical panels, front to back on horizontal panels. It minimizes the effect of any contaminants that happen to end up on your applicator pad without your knowledge.
 
That (linearity) and do a quick wipeaway with a towel before touching the surface with the pad.



Sacrifice the towel before the applicator.
