Which combo for Black?

Hey guys,

Going to be doing a black car thursday morning for a friend, and am pondering on a combo to go with.

The car had AIO/SG x2 before xmas, but the owner wants it polished out again. It's just back from the dealer, and luckily they didnt touch the paintwork.

Products available.

-Polishes-

Megs #80 (If needed. Not sure if there's any scratches/swirls yet)

Klasse AIO

Clearkote VM

-Sealants-

Klasse SG

EX

Wolfgang

UPP

-Waxes-

Natty's

Megs #16

Clearkote CMW

Souveran

I want this baby to gleam!:D

By the way. The car will be detailed in a heated garage. I'll be starting the car at 8a.m. If i get the owner to leave the car in the garage in the warm until the afternoon, would I be able to apply another layer of sealant, or top it with wax?

Thanks for the advice guys:xyxthumbs

I'd do #80 (even if it doesn't need it), AIO, EX x 2, Souveran IF you have the time to do this since it will take three days to complete.

If you want the best look in the quickest time, I'd do the same as above except WG instead of EX and Souveran. You can still top WG with Souveran if you want but would have to do it the next day.

WG is my new favorite on black either met. or non met. I used to use EX on black but WG looks even wetter. That being said, nothing has topped EX + Souveran on my black Expedition.

All of your products would look great together, so it really doesn't matter. I'd definitely do #80 and AIO. I like AIO better than VM hands down. After that just pick a sealant and then pick a carnauba topper and it will look great. The key is the prep (#80 and AIO), take your time with that part.

Hmmm...so many great products...assuming no swirls here's my choice

VM

EX x2 (24hrs between)

Natty's

Although, my truck has never looked better than it does now with

3M PI II RC

AIO

UPP

And...Souveran is obviously the CHOICE on black.

And...I've seen some incredible pics of

VM

EX x2 (24hrs between)

CMW

I probably didn't help at all...If it was me I would go with what I know works(since it's a customer), the AIO/UPP combo...but if it was my own car I'd go with:

#80

VM

Souveran

Thanks Jason.

Was tempted to top with the souveran, even with the weather as it is here. But with a few sunny days forecast for the week, it may just get a souveran topper for free.

Steve,

I'll have to ask him if I can have the car for the week, so I can do all that I want to the finish lol

I think it is a double edge sword when using Carnuba on Black. Summer is nearing and those of us with Black cars know the car's surface is going to get hot! This means nuba's will melt and collect grime. However, nothing quite looks as good as a nuba on black, but many products like Zaino, FMJ, NXT or Wolfgang come close. For an everyday car I would stear away from nuba personally, and chose a good sealant.

I've been topping with S100 and haven't had the problems you are describing with my black Mustang during the summer.

I don't have that problem in Dallas either.

I have seen where I've laid down carnauba too thick and the excess will rehaze a bit in the sun but a quick wipe and it is fine after that.

It's Carnuba and it melts, and when any wax melts dust will stick more than if it isn't melted. It might not be a big visual problem to you but it does exist, especially on a black car. Here's an example of different melting points.

High Temp Polymer Paste Boiling Point 318, Melting Point 250

Pink Wax Boiling Point 160, melting point they don't say, but you can imagine if the boiling point of high temp is 318 and Pink is 160, melting point must not be too high.

I think it is cool that this company posts their msds sheets and I purchased some Pink today regardless of melting temp because I would say anything with nuba has a low melting temp, and I still love nuba at times. Just not on a black car in summer.

Hey Scott, did you get that Glare, and my washes?

Yeah, I got them this weekend. I picked out a few things for you to try, I just need to get some bottles to put them in. I used the Glare on the windshield and you aren't kidding about the slickness!

I tried the Tropicare today, pretty nice product, very easy to use.

Back on topic....I now have a black car and I didn't notice any durability problems using carnaubas on my paint during the summer.

Thanks for getting me back on track, didn't mean to get off topic there. That's cool you guys don't have problems, lets just say it's my preference to use sealants in summer on Black, and I have had three Black cars/trucks before. I will say nothing looks as good as nuba on Black, that's for sure. With all the popularity of modern sealants I found it interesting a large % of people still like nuba. I guess it's time for an experiment, nuba on half the hood and a sealant on the other.

I'd like to see that or sealant on 1/3, carnuba on 1/3, then sealant topped with carnuba on 1/3 :D

I'm seriously going to do it if I can find someone with a black car for a guinee pig. I currently have dark blue and I'm not going to do this on a customers car, so I need to think how to entice someone. Anyhow, I'm wondering what nuba would be best to try, currently I have Natty's, S100, Pink (Soon), and a couple others but those three are the most popular around here out of what I got.

I just thought about someone, she has a black suburban. I could try all three and two sealants on the roof alone, and just detail the rest of her car. I guess I need to look at the roof and see what I'm dealing with, it's 10 years old. I'll check tommorow.

Hmmm? Just gave me an idea. I just laid down a coat of EX P on one side of my Mustang hood with UPP on the other side. So far after one coat I like the look of UPP slightly better. It seems to be a tad clearer. Maybe I'll split the hood into quarters after I lay down another coat of each and then top a 1/4 panel of each side of the hood with S100. Should be an interesting test. This outrageous winter we have been having here in the Northwest has really brought me to detailing much earlier than normal. Very little rain and temperatures approaching the 70's has made it nice.:)

I'd try:

AIO > UPP (x2)

#80 > EX (x2) > Nattys (x2) [optional]

#80 > VM (if needed) > Nattys

thanks for the recommendations guys. How would EX etc bond with VM? Havent tried that combo before. I've always used AIO as a base.

Decisions, decisions....... lol

Will post pics for sure.
