Where to get inexpensive clay?

I've been searching around and it looks like the cheapest clay I can find is Clay Magic at Autozone for $10.99. Is there any other place (B&M or Online) where you can get clay for a cheaper price?

Once you add in shipping, most clays will cost more than to just pick it up locally.

Yeah. For a second I thought clay would be cheaper after seeing 8 grams for $15.50 but shipping brings it up to how much I buy it locally. That about answers my question.

Do you mean ounces?

Some clays might seem more expensive, but keep in mind that the Mothers kit, which goes for $17+tax ($18.5 total in my area) locally, only comes with a 2.8 ounce (80 gram) bar. In comparison, the Poorboy's and Chemical Guys clays are 4 ounces, and they sell for 13+shipping (~$20 depending on vendor). So if you're just looking for clay (not lube), the better deals are online...especially if you're going to place an order anyway.

EDIT--actually that Clay Magic is a better deal.....

How many ounces are you getting with the ClayMagic and what is its aggressiveness?

For comparison Zaino's Z-18 clay for 4oz is $17 + 8.95 shipping, PremiumAuto for 7.14oz is $19 + shipping, AutoGeek for 16oz is $60 + shipping, TOL for 8oz is $16 + shipping.

Some clay is ultra fine, some is average and some is aggressive. Know which one you're buying.

Looks like TOL is the best buy.

Clay Magic doesn't really state how aggressive their clay is. It comes with 4oz of clay. From my calculations, buying clay at my local Autozone would be cheaper than buying it online, even if it does come with lube.

Not sure if it's just my location, but they have an "AutoZone Rewards" card. It states:

Earn a FREE $20 AutoZone gift card with five purchases of $20 or more.

A little math here:

$11 x 2 (Clay Magic) = $22 per purchase

$22 x 5 (Purchases) = $110 for 10 packs of clay magic

12 packs of Clay Magic for $112 (Extra $2 since price is $11).

That makes it $9.33 per pack of clay magic for me.

Maybe I'm being a bit too cheap on clay.

Yeah, but you are getting a 100gr bar instead of TOL's 200gr for $16.95 I(also more aggressive)

How do you tell the difference between clays? Is it marked or "classed" for different uses?

Last year I used "Clay Magic" blue bar and liked it very much. This year I used Mothers "yellow" bar and as although it felt the same when I was using the clay, as soon as I started waxing the car, I could tell the difference. The Clay Magic left the paint much slicker and the wax went on and buffed off much easier. (I use Klasse AIO followed by P21S Carnuba by the way.) I was very dissapointed seeing as the Mother's clay was $5 more.

Glad to hear this discussion - I had the same dilemma. I'm new to the detailing gig, and wasn't sure if I wanted to put in the effort to clay (price was a factor), but when I saw that clay magic bar+lube set for $10.99 I went for it.
