Wheel well dressing suggestions

I'm detailing a 2001 Ford Excursion with wheel wells that are 1/2 hard black plastic and 1/2 undercoating type grainy, used to be black, coating.

Long story short, the undercoating probably works great for rust but looks terrible. It's the cappuchino color of old unwashed car tires. What kind of spray on dressings are there for wheel wells? I saw one by Megs in a "how-to" here but havn't been able to find it again.

Thanks for the help!

Go to walmart, get 3 cans of high gloss black paint. It'll cost you 3 bucks.

Clean your wells, then paint.

You can spray a water based dressin in them but it won't last. When i get full details and the well are discolored and a dressing won't last i paint them. It makes them easier to care for.

Hey True, the paint will come off though in a season or two?

Sounds like he has a decision to make then. A. dress the wells with a waterbased dressing and hope it lasts more then a few days. or B. Paint them and know that it will last a few "seasons" as you put it.

I truely hope that i am not the only one here that will paint the wheel wells and undercaraige when needed. I guess some people could get the wrong idea about cause they do it at dealerships and auctions. And we know how much they are loved around here. :bump

I agree with truedetailer, on occasion paint is the only answer.
I had a 79 Bronco w/ 33's and a 3" lift and I couldn't stand the way it looked, but a few cans gloss black on the frame and in the wells and it looked great again.

I'm not complaining, just asking. Just wondering.
I've painted lots of undersides and trailer hitches, but not wheel wells, though I want to do my own.

Gloss or flat? HMMMMMM. The more I think of it the more I like the idea. Would give me an excuse to touch up the brake rotors and calipers with Rustoleum silver as well as a true wheel detail.

Why didn't I think of this? :wall

I REALLY appreciate the help. I hope I can return it someday.

Just to make things interesting I dressed one with FB gel, one with 303 spray and painted two using an adhesion promoter and gloss paint.

I would have taken pics (all four look great) but my camera is off visiting Barber motorsports museum and I am not pulling those wheels again.

I guess the thing we need to look for is how will they look in a week?

True, I do the same as well. I have a lift in my shop. I have one dealer account whom I do all of his trucks. I remove the tires and paint the entire undercarrige & wheel wells. Makes a huge difference. I get $250 per truck without the painting, $325 painted.

Flat is too flat, go with the gloss for that water based dressing look.

Spray a generous amount of APC (full strength), let it dwell for 5 min or so, and take a power washer to them. I like to dress the wells with NL or BnB (cut 3 parts product 1 part water). NL and/or BnB you can spray them down and walk away.

I clean the wheel wells real good and spray on semi gloss black enamel.
I don't care for the gloss or the flat
