Wheel Wax/sealant vs. plain old carnuba

Do i really need to purchase a specialty wheel wax/sealant instead of just putting some meguiars paste wax on my rims? I would think the normal carnuba wax would repel, or at least make it easy to take off any brake dust just like the more expensive products.

If you want to you could just put meguiars paste wax on the rims but you would have to apply it more often than you would compared to a sealant. I have not used wheel wax so I don't know how long the protection is.
 
i think i am one of the few (on this site) that absolutely love wheelwax and won't use anything else now that i have found it. i swear this stuff is more durable than anything on my paint. leaves the wheels slick for ~2 months, easy to put on and off, what more could i ask for? What I will say is that when they say it will remove marks and spots, I tend to disagree and would rather use something else to do that. I also prefer to use a foam app. and they recommend terry.

i think wheel wax's flaw with some people is the name. in all reality it is not a wax, it is a soft polymer. i guess wheel wax just sounds better than wheel soft polymer :)

On my Anthracite alloys, I applied some 1Z Glanz. It really did the trick they looked fantastic, even after driving in heavy rain (British summer!!!!), the next day they still looked very shiney.
 
On my wheels I've tried #16, Natty's, Klasse SG, Wheel Wax and PB's Wheel Sealant. #16 and Nattys didn't (IMHO) last very long, under two weeks. SG sounded a couple of months but gave my wheels a wrapped in plastic look that I didn't really care for. Now both Wheel Wax and PB's Wheel Sealant lift my wheels with a very clear, reflextive look and made the metallic jump out at you. I've gotten over 3 months at of both and I love the look. The Wheel Wax does have some cleaning ability and I know someone that uses it on lighty dirty wheels and it cleans them up well. The PB Wheel Sealant needs have the wheels cleaned with something like AIO or SSR1 befoe application but IMHO but in MHO the eztra step is well worth the effort. Bottom line is that you will get much better durability out of sealants or products made just for the wheels than you will with just using a regular wax.
 
I like the look of #16 on wheels, but I always apply a sealant to my wheels whether I'm topping it with a wax or not. Currently I have been using WG sealant on wheels. It lasts pretty long for me (I always reapply about every month anyway, but it's never been gone at that point). #16 seemed to attract/hold more dust to the wheel than a polymer sealant does.
