Wheel rust

First I was stupid...I think the damage was caused by a too strong wheel cleaner:cry:



Any ideas short of taking the wheels off and refinishing the area? are there any sprays that will minimize the rust area?

That is the haub, it is steel, it will rust. Looks like your rims are aluminum and wont rust, just corrode at the mating surfaces. Clean up and paint if thats what you want. RANDAL
 
i was going to say, its not the wheel itself...its the HUB



you can sand it down, steel wool it, metal polish, try some CLR and a scouring pad, etc.



then after you are done with it, get some clearcoat in a can and spray it down with a few coats over a weekend...then put the wheels on and just maintain it every 6 months or so if you want to...
 
I doubt they are aluminum.



You just need to slean the rust off and spray them with a HI TEMP paint or clear.
 
That's cast iron, it's the center of the brake rotor. They're painted with a thin silver paint from the factoy. I doubt it's your fault, it'd have to be a serious garage queen to not rust. The fix would be take the rotors off, mask off the area the pad rubs, prep and repaint the rusty area.

That's the best way John. Perfect time to do this is when you send your wheels out for reconditioning.



I'm certain wheel acid would remove the rust, but it will come back relatively quick. Especially if you live on the water. :D
