Wheel Cleaner ????

I need advice on products that would compare to P21s gel wheel Cleaner. I am sure this is super product, yet I do not want to spend that kind of money at this point. What wheel cleaning products do you recomend.

I am a big fan of the P21S gel, I buy it by the five liter container. I have also tried many others always looking for something that works as well and is mild. The only one I have found that works as well and is very similar is Chemical Guys Sticky Gel Citrus Wheel Cleaner but it too isn't terribly cheap.

Rich

A decent cleaner that can easily be had locally is Meguiar's Hot Rims All Wheel Cleaner (and it's cheap, $4-5). I use it whenever I run out of P21S Gel. I tend to dilute it 50/50 for mild washing, but use it full power and allow it to soak for 5 min when tackling heavy brake dust.
That's what I use at the moment. It does work great, but you still have to scrub....

For general use; I like SimpleGreen at 4:1; it cuts most road grime/brake dust without issue and doesn't harm anything.

For caked on brake dust on the inner barrel though; Meg's ALL Wheel cleaner works well and Meg's Wheel Brightner absolutely works, just makes sure you rewash with soap/water and rise WELL.

I agree. I use simple green as a wheel cleaner and it works well as an APC too. About a 4:1 ratio is what I use.

there's been a lot written about Simple Green and its use on alloy wheels - - I read up and decide whether it's a risk you wish to take.

its your wheels are constantly getting dirty and build up occurs next day, first thing you need to do is CHANGE YOUR BRAKE PADS. the best wheel cleaner will do nothing if you use the same pads over and over. I would change the pads and do a deep cleaning of the wheels while they are off, then apply a few sealant coats, then you should be able to wash regularly with ease

I've been using this one as well since I've been too lazy to order P21s, it works quite well on a 750iL that I frequently clean which has some of the worst dusting pads on it I think I've ever witnessed.

Plus it has a nifty foaming nozzle built in.

Guess [what it takes to clean the inner part of the rim] depends on... [also applying] sealant to the inner rim as well.

Note that the inner surfaces and the back sides of the spokes are often roughly fnished. By polishing them smooth before sealing you can make subsequent cleanups a lot easier. Gotta take it easy though, as the finish on the backsides is often very thin, even on "good" wheels.

Whatever works for you is cool with me, but I hope you don't experience what a Jetta owner posted about a few years ago- he found that Simple Green very gradually caused permanent clouding of his wheels. By the time it got obvious it was too late and he had to have them refinished. That's not intended as a :nono but rather as a friendly caveat.

Anyone have experience with Meg's APC+ as a wheel cleaner? I just ordered a gallon along with Wheel Brightener and want something to use that is less aggressive than the WB.

^^^ I would try washing the wheels with soap & water first. If that doesn't work, bust out the WB. That way, you are going least aggressive method first AND you don't have to spend money on another dedicated wheel-cleaning chemical.

When you guys use APC+ at what dilution do you use it at? I usually use APC+ or OPC for light cleaning duties.

Ive used P21 and CG sticky gel. Both work great, CG is cheaper but P21 works slightly better.

Would like to find a cheap wheel cleaner thats strong enough to remove heavy brake dust but wont damage any kind of finish.

when you guys write 4:1 ratio, would that be 4 simple green to 1 water ratio, or 4 water to 1 simple green ratio??

thanks a lot! --arthur

It would be 4 parts water to 1 part wheel cleaner. I'd advice against using SG for wheels though. There's been reports of damaged wheels with SG. I'd go with a quality dedicated wheel cleaner like Optimum Power Clean. It's safe for all types of wheels and you can even dilute it 3 parts water to 1 part OPC.

the're both good, my favorite was the one in the orange bottle.

For very dirty wheels I use Wheel Brightener, I'm almost always suprized by the efficacy of this stuff but I try to keep it as a last resort as its insanly dangerous to your health. ONR mixed as a QD, coupled with soapy water and good cleaning tools will clean all but the dirtiest wheels and its very safe.

i used to use eagle one then switched to megs hot rims all wheel cleaner and havent really tried any others .. definately going to try voodoo shoq and p21s soon and megs wheel brightener i might just buy in the jug and fill my hot rims bottle with it as well...

just need to find one perfect one and buy in bulk cuz i go thru alot of wheel cleaner in my side jobs !
