What's your favorite for aluminum?

Option 13

New member
After reading the thread about acid based cleaners and the thread JDookie started about chrome wheels I got curious about what everyones favorite protectant for aluminum is.

Same 2 questions raised by JDookie:

1. Whats your favorite polish and is for clear coated aluminum wheels?

2. What's your favorite protectant for aluminum wheels?

Thanks,

1)Mother's Metal Polish.

2)I don't usually protect aluminum, but I would say the Klasse twins if anything.

After trying a variety of metal polish (Wenol, Mother's Billet, etc), I settled on the new Meguiar's NXT Metal Polish, followed by a heavy coat of NXT Wax on both the polished and gray painted cast area of the wheels.

They have a deeper shine with the NXT metal polish than previous products.

I am considering Zoop Seal this winter when the Mach 1 goes to garage queen status.

Man those look GREAT!!!

Is Meguiar's NXT Metal Polish safe on clearcoated wheels?

If so, then I'll be picking up both those products to try on mine :xyxthumbs

Thanks for the pics,

If the wheels are clear coated I treat the wheels as other painted surfaces on the vehicle.

For non-coated aluminum and metals I like Zephyr pro perfection.

No..No..No.. DO NOT USE NXT metal polish on clearcoated wheels! It has an abrasive content and is made for polishing raw aluminum wheels. You can use NXT Tech Wax with no problem.

Hope that helps.

Totoland Mach: Thanks for the heads up! Check this out....earlier this evening I went to buy the Meguiars metal polish but I read on the label that it was NOT recommended for clearcoated wheels :nono. I just got home and checked the latest on Autopia and found your post.:bow Whew that was close.

I still think your wheels look awesome:xyxthumbs and if mine weren't clearcoated I'd be polishing away right now!!!

Thanks again,

GSRstilez: simichrome is a polishing paste. It's used alot in the tool and die trade as the last step in the polishing process... they use diamond compounds of various grits because the steels they're polishing are usually hardened and then follow with simichrome.

You can find it in most hardware stores.

I don't know if it would be safe on clearcoated aluminum though!!!

Hope that helps,

No problem Option 13, glad to help. Thanks for the compliment on the wheels. They require frequent maintenance, but I like their looks on the Mach 1... I'm slowly working on a 2003 Eleanor type Mach 1.

Maybe you can post some progress pics for us sometime, I'd really like to see how that project is going

Is that the car that's in the pic with your wheels?

Option 13: yup...that's the car the wheels go on. It's a '03 Mach 1 with Dark Shadow Gray paint.

I looking to possibly paint the hood stripes (instead of keeping Ford's black vinyl hood stripes) and adding the Steeda side exhaust.

I'll post some pics this winter (that's when I'll probably start on some serious work).

See Ya

Yes, DO NOT use simichrome on clearcoated wheels. You can get it at most bike shops as well. It is the best metal polish I have ever used. It is a pink paste that comes in a tube.
