What's up with backing in to parking spaces?

I finally have to ask this my brothers....I do not get the backing into parking spaces...I can understand a truck backing in to pick up items or drop off items...but in the last 2 years I have noticed small coupes and other small auto's taking more time to try and handle backing in to spaces. I am talking about areas in wide open department stores where the individual backs in to a space with no one next to them. Is this some macho thing....some fad or " hey...look I can back into a space...I'm cool".....:(:hairpull

I don't understand why do you care?

you have to back out coming or going

I don't see the differance

F.Y.I it takes me no extra time & I do it for a Quick get away:bolt

if you park somewhere where everyone else there is gonna leave at the same time, like a concert or school, or the fair, or some place like that or just a place where you can tell its gonna be a pain in the a$$ to back out of, it makes more sense to back into the spot so you can make a quick/easier get away

It takes these people more time to back in the space.....they have to go past the space back up....cut the wheel...straighten out ..then go forward cut the wheel again then straighten out then back in.......I just don't get it. I have been driving for 40 years......never saw this backing in thing until the last 6 or 7 years.....

I agree in most cases....I am talking about spaces where there is no one near that individual...areas with 5 or 6 cars parked in an area. ....I know it's just a thing with me........

If this annoys you then how do you react to parallel parking?

I prefer to back into spaces since I know that my only obstacles are the two cars on either side. If it's a crowded place, you have to deal with people walking by, little kids running around, other cars backing out, trying to see past the hummer that's parked next to you, etc. which I'd rather deal with straight on.

its proven to be safer to pull out of spaces forwards, than reversing OUT of parking spaces.

I have a client office site that insist ALL staff and visitors reverse park in spaces as it reduces their accident rates. If you park forwards they will come and find you and make you move your vehicle.

makes sense to me...

It took you 6 or 7 years of seeing this for you to ask the question? What else is stewing in that head of yours?

:grrr

Whenever possible I back in as well. I'm not trying to be "cool" but I do it for one good reason. The front ends of my cars are low and the back ends are higher. I back in so that I can avoid scraping the front air dams.

Doesn't bother me unless the person is among the 98% of people who can't back straight into a parking space and prevents you from parking next to them due to the risk of door dings. It is also a real pain in a crowded parking lot when someone spends 2-3 minutes backing into a space and holds up traffic.

Everyone here is OCD on some level. This is a forum dedicated to keeping our cars squeaky clean, right? I admit it, that includes me.

:buffing:

suki22 - I'd suggest that after 40 years of driving, if you've been driving into spaces all this time, why not try somthing new. I personally back into spaces because i find it easier both ways, backing in and driving out. I drive a fullsize extended cab 4x4 pickup, driving into a spot is actually more difficult because the approach angle is much sharper than backing in.

The majority of people who ride with me hate it when i back in, because im not the typical dork who looks over their shoulder etc. I use mirrors, thats the way i've been trained as i spend these cold maine winters plowing snow, and if you think you can back straight down a 1/8 mile driveway in the snow looking over your shoulder, think again.

I've got friends who tell me "one of these days you're gonna hit someone because you arent looking over your shoulder." But when looking over your shoulder you have 1 blind side, whereas using your mirros you've got a much better chance of seeing all around you, that is, if they're adjusted correctly.

Maybe it just depends on what you drive. to each his own.
