I didn't invent the acronym, but when I first heard of it, it did make sense to me. Random, cause they may be one or two together or several, thus being random and not uniform. Isolated, because they are not grouped together, but separated. Deep, if you can feel them with your fingernails, they are deep, at least past you clear coat and maybe beyond your color coat and primer. Scratches, well that's what we are talking about, scratches and not swrils. Then again swrils are scratches, but let's say for this discussion, straight scratches and not spider webbing. So RIDS remains in my vocabulary, for now anyway.

I dislike the term RIDS because often times once we polish and remove the swirls, the paint still has RIDS (that seemed previously invisible) that were hiding behind the swirls. Since when are actual scratches less noticible than swirl marks?
They are usually on every panel, so they are not at all Isolated, nor are they deep enough to really be considered actual Scratches. I prefer just using the term "deeper marring".

I thought the title line was going to ask the difference in guts and balls.
GUTS - Is arriving home late after a night out with the guys, being
met by your wife with a broom, and having the guts to ask: "Are you
still cleaning, or are you flying somewhere?"
BALLS - Is coming home late after a night out with the guys, smelling
of perfume and beer, lipstick on your collar, slapping your wife on
the butt and having the balls to say: "You're next, Chubby."
I hope this clears up any confusion on the definitions. Medically
speaking there is no difference in the outcome. Both result in DEATH..
