What's the deal with "paint sealant" from a new car dealer?

I probably shouldn't say it here, but I'm a finance manager at a car dealership in the northeast US.

We've always had a problem with acid rain and snow eating at the paint on our new cars. We solved the problem by applying a product from a company called Autoguard; the rep calls it "paint sealant".

Please, no comments on whether it's a good idea as a customer to pay for it or not; we don't sell it, or charge more for it, we just put it on all the cars so they don't get acid rain marks. And they don't.

My question is, what is it? Is it a worthwhile product to search out, speaking as a consumer? How long does it last? (The warranty offered, if we sell it, is 5 years.) How is the gloss and depth? (I can't really tell, all the cars are Chevys, and, well, it only gets so good.)

Just curious, y'know? The rep only has enough information to sell the product. He's a good guy, and the product does what we want it to, so, again, please no slams there. I just want to know, WHAT IS IT?

Does the sealant have to be reapplied or does the consumer have to take any special care of the sealant?

I'm not aware of the exact product, but by getting a little more info we might be able to tell when it's similar to.

Btw, have you seen how they apply the sealant?

This sounds like a product that we have over here in the UK called Diamond Brite, amongst other names. Car dealers offer it for around $500, to be applied onto new cars. They say that you won't need to wax the car for 2years with this applied. It is done by the car dealer and you can then buy top up bottles to add to your washing water. Franchises have just started up offering this service for used cars. I know people who have had this done and the cars always look pretty good. I think it is the lazy mans answer to decent looking car as I am not sure what the effect of waxing over the top would be.

I actually have the complete kit in the garage and can post more details if anyone is interested.

I take it this isn't some run of the mill Klasse SG or #20 we're talking about.. If something were to be able to "prevent" acid rain from leaving marks, FOR 5 YEARS, that'd be a worthwhile investment...

Usually, the paint sealants that are mentioned here are products such as SG or #20. The theory behind them is that they act like a car wax, except they last a lot longer and are a lot more durable due to their chemical makeup. (polymer sealants as apposed to an actual wax) However, their lifespan is usually 6 months or so, which upon they would need to be re-applied...

Try a search on the site....you will see many posts about this topic....

For the most part it may be a polymer sealant....But READ the fine print on the warranty.....I bet it says something about reapplying once a year or something.....
