What's the best change in your detailing process?

The biggest change was when I stoped using MF towels with the prickly ends. Its really overkill IMHO for a well maintained surface. I even stopped using it on my wheels. I now only use the Sonus Der Wunder MF towels with closed ends. I gave them a call and a young lady indicated that these were the towels sold on Autopia-Carcare that didn't have the split ends. And of course the garbage sold at autostores is nothing more than janitorial towels repackaged and way way overpriced for car enthusiasts.

I also stopped buffing with polising towels and use a dedicated Meguiar's Gold Class buffing towel.

For washing I stay clear of MF wash sponges because even though they are good at lifing debris they are also good at trapping it and not letting go. I have washed two or three times and still had debris in there. So now I just chuck the Chenillie sponge after a couple of uses.

and of course I try to touch the paint as little as possible and have dispensed with quick detailing between washes altoghether. I now oly apply a quick detailer after washing when the paint is CLEAN.

Where do I start?

1. Proper education on various detailing procedures (thanks autopia and i will not name the other forum, letters 4&3 of the alphabet)

2. Proper washing techniques ( 2 bucket method, better soap, ww mf drying towels)

3. Profesional/enthusiast grade products instead of otc

4. PC

5. Quality mf usage for polish and wax/sealant removal.

I still need to work on several areas of my skills such as polishing each and every swirl out, which may be hopeless as both my cars are black.

The old "more thinking, less doing" approach.

Amen to that!!

Just do not stop preaching about washing techniques. It takes some of us longer than others. Yet it eventually sinks in to those that really are trying to get and keep a blemish free paint surface. mmmm... Something that I have yet to achieve but am working on it.

I second that. Accumulator has really added to the community by his comments on washing in a non-marring fashion...
