I err on the side of caution and *NEVER* touch the paint between washes unless I get some kind of awful bird-bomb. Just too great a risk of instilling marring. For those bird-bombs, I like FinishKare's 146, or their FK425, or Griot's SpeedShine; I like these better than the other Quick Detailer ("QD") products I've tried.
For washing, I always use Griot's Car Wash, which I consider the best on the market. Sorta pricey though, and I hear the DuraGloss shampoo is almost as good (it's available OTC) for a lot less money. Many people like Meguiar's Gold Class, and you could sure do a lot worse even if *I* don't think it's all that great. I vaguely recall good reports about TurtleWax's ICE but I've never tried it.
I *DO NOT* recommend the use of cheap shampoos, they have lousy lubricity and encapsulation.
The 845 is pretty tough stuff and it stands up well to shampoos. It also sheds dirt readily so it's possible to wash quite gently and still get the vehicle nice and clean. Just redo the 845 as soon as you notice a change in the beading so you can stay one step ahead of its eventual deterioration.
