man you guys just made me go buy a Rigid WD4050 tonight at Home Depot. Out the door for about 77 bucks. I'll be trying it out tomorrow if I have a car to detail

Optimus, go back and get the Pro Hose Kit and you'll be complete. It transforms the machine.

I'm in nearly the same boat. I was actually researching various shop vacs right around the time this thread began to develop. I liked the compact size and power of the WD4050 but was disappointed to find that it didn't come with much as far as accesories. Seeing as the accesories would run another 25-35 it put me into the price range of the WD5500.
5 Gallon Wall Vac - RIDGID Professional Tools
I went ahead and got the 5500 for a really good price on ebay. It is great to be able to hang it on the wall to save valuable floor space in my garage. The hose is long enough to reach anywhere in my vehicle w/o removing it from its mount. Now all I need is some time to break it in.

What about filters guys? Has anybody replaced the stock filter with one of these. HD has them for $30 while the stock filter is $15.
I have one of those in mine. I can't really tell if there's any difference in air (exhaust) quality, but it does seem to take longer to clog, and is much easier to clean than the stock filter. For wet vacuuming I put the regular one back in since it seems like the HEPA filter will last longer if I don't get it wet. Probably just goofy...

They are a little spendy but a high quality unit. Also, check out this video of the unit sucking up 50lbs of portland cement without a filter installed. Impressive!!!

I also have the 5hp / 4 gallon rigid that everyone's been posting pics about - it has an excellent power/size ratio and is way easier to move around then my previous 16 gallon 6hp craftsman (which died a few months ago).

do any of you guys use yours without the filter? I read somewhere you will get better suction without but never really did a scientific test on it. Just took it out. I have the 5.0 hp wet/dry from craftsman.
Man what I could really use is a remote switch for my vac. I like the 18' hose but having a remote starter on it would save me some time for sure. Anybody ever thought to rig something like this up? Where would a good place to purchase this setup at?

i use the metro vac by metropolitan vacuum company. great tool. 4hp motor, it vacs and blows. excellent blowing water out of the nooks and crannys after a wash or engine detail.:buffing:
