I'm going to be doing a little detailing this weekend and do not have a PC at my disposal, so I will be doing everything by hand. When I go to use a cleaner/polish such as #9 (example) what would I use to apply to get a good "cut?"
This is a question I had wondered about too; I just bought a PC this week so I have been applying by hand too. IMHO a terry applicator has a bit more bite/scrubbing power than a MF.
The general consensus seems to be foam has the lightest bite and MF is in between...but closer to terry than foam.
I find terry to be the most aggressive and it'll often leave micromarring. Sorta a toss-up between foam and MF, IMO, what with the different varieties of both. Generally, I find (quality) MFs to have less cut than foam.
A folded terry cloth towel works best, IMO. Unlike applicator pads, you can refold several times so you always have a clean surface to work with. You let product build up on an applicator pad and you will get marring.
My product suggestion would be Meguiars #80. It works great by hand because it breaks down pretty quickly. Even on black I got no marring after using it by hand.
I probably should've said that the cotton usually only leaves noticeable micromarring on soft single stage. A while back some well-regarded Autopian (can't remember who it was) tested (soft) terry, foam, and MF on b/c and found that none of them marred it at all. But YMMV, of course....
