What to treat weather striping with?

Could anyone recomend what to use on the rubber weather striping, around the doors, sun roof, and trunk?

I want something that will keep the stuff "moist", for a while, but not be messy.....I have tried Vaseline (greasy) before, and can only find silicon grease in spray cans, which are messy, too. I forget where, but I was told that the silicon grease was the best for this application.

Has anyone used tire gel for this?

Speedy, run -- do not walk -- to the Autopia Car Care store and buy Einszett Gummipflege. Don't be stupid like I was and buy just one; buy 2, because you're going to love this stuff.



I hear you can also buy BMW's gummipflege, if you have a BMW dealer nearby. They're apparently equivalent products.



I think you'll find corroboration for this opinion if you search in the Detailing Products Discussion forum. Or go to the "Reviews" section (click on the link at the top of the home page) and look at what folks have said about it. Absolutely nothing equals the stability and long-term benefits of this product. It's a snap to apply. It's not greasy. And (at the risk of anthropomorphizing a detailing product) it "feeds" the rubber seals you're concerned about so that they stay supple and black.



Please do not subject the seals to Vaseline (for reasons you have already seen). And silicone is a big :nono to be avoided on all rubber components -- but most especially ones that you want to last. (Some folks here will use silicone products on what they consider "disposable" items, like tires.)



BTW, if your seals have not been well-cared-for, you may want to clean them before applying Gummipflege or any other conditioner/protectant. What kind of good cleaners do you have on hand?



Finally, :welcome This is the first post I've seen from you. It would help some of us if you would go back into the User CP and add some indication of your location -- at least what state or province you're in. And you might want to edit your "signature" to tell what year/make/model/color of vehicle(s) you're caring for, as that can sometimes make a difference in the advice you'll get.
 
The product that Lynn mentioned sounds good. I've never used it. I just use a PDMS water-based (milky-white in color) silicon product. This seems to work well for me.



What is in this mystery Einszett Gummipflege if it isn't a silicon, then? It seems like people always say what not to use, and why, but not what to use and why. thanks.
 
BMW and Einszett Gummipflege are two completely different products. I have both. The BMW product looks like vaseline and the Einszett is a liquid. I've used the BMW product for years and it works great. I just tried the Einszett product and time will tell, I suspect it will work wonderfully, as all Einszett products I've ever tried have.
 
Speedy- Everyone seems happy with either of the Gummi products. You won't go wrong with them.



Anyone got an ingredient listing for these products? I've been using Wurth's Rubber Care Gel Stick. It's NOT a gel, and it's NOT a stick :nixweiss . That in itself sorta bugs me (gonna try one of the Gummi's one of these days). The Wurth's a liquid with a sponge applicator. Silicone-free. It's worked fine for me over the years, but still, I dunno....ingredient list follows:



Isoparaffinic hydrocarbons CAS#64742-47-8, Beeswax CAS#57-55-6, Parrafin oil CAS#8042-47-5.



Anyone out there (who DIDN'T sleep through Chemistry 101 :o) that can tell me about that first one?
 
Einszett Gummipflege, from what I can tell, seems to be a runny PDMS dressing that comes in an applicator bottle. Citronella scent. I haven't used it yet though.... :doh
 
Does the Einszett Gummipflege UV protect the rubber? This is pretty much the only reason that I use 303 instead of other products both on the interior and exterior of the car...
 
I think I'll try that gummipflege, for there's a Bimmer dealer near by that I could drop into.

Cleaners? I have armorall all purpose cleaner, westleys "bleach white" tire cleaner (I like that stuff!), and then just dish soap and turtle wax car soap.
